Respiratory Therapist

Provides respiratory care for patients in adult, neonatal care, and/or outpatient CPAP centers . Employees may perform ECG, EEG, pulmonary function testing, & bronchoscopy and any other testing as deemed within the scope of practice by national standards.

 

RIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assesses patient’s respiratory status by incorporating relevant clinical information including vital signs, chest X-rays, and ABG values. Sets-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and performs associated critical care duties such as airway management and tracheal suctioning. Performs arterial punctures and obtains arterial blood samples from arterial lines.  Performs analysis of blood gases. May attend high-risk deliveries as member of Neonatal Resuscitation Team. Performs non‑invasive oxygen and carbon dioxide monitoring. Obtains and analyzes arterial blood gas samples. May perform pulmonary function testing and cardiopulmonary exercise testing after training is complete in the Pulmonary Diagnostics Lab. May perform surfactant replacement therapy (NICU). May assess respiratory status of newborn infants upon delivery (NICU). Performs endotracheal intubation, and performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation as required. Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.  Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injury‑accident to Manager. May assist physicians with Bronchoscopies, EBUS, Navigation or CRYO when each competency is completed. May perform EEG’s after completion of competency. Performs diagnostic cardiac testing including EKG’s, rhythm strips, and 24 hour holter monitoring. Performs charge and preceptor duties.

REQUIRED:

Graduation from an accredited respiratory care program with an Associate’s degree or equivalent and RRT credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care. New Graduates must be registry eligible and have completed a registry eligible accredited respiratory care program. New graduates may be hired as Level II therapist but will be required to obtain their RRT (registry) within six months of their start date to continue employment at Northside. Therapist that have greater than 5 years of clinical experience and have a CRT or CRTT may be hired, are eligible for a Level II position and will fall under the Grandfather clause not requiring them to take their registry. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) by the American Heart Association. **NRP is only required when rotating to the NICU or attending deliveries. Maintains proficiency in arterial blood sampling techniques as prescribed by the hospital and/or JCAHO. Valid State License
