TC Berlin offers a challenge for most RTs. Many RTs want the “busier and larger” hospitals so they can see the “real stuff”. Larger hospitals mean more RTs per shift so there’s always somebody there to help if you get in a pinch. At Rural hospitals like TC Berlin, it’s just one RT all the time. You have to know everything that you were taught in school because you will need that knowledge to diagnose and treat our patients. You will not be able to wait for another RT to come and help you. Over the years, I’ve seen everything come through here that goes through a typical larger hospital. There won’t always be that kind of action but when it happens, you will have to be ready. During the slower times, that’s where the discipline to learn even more comes in. Keeping your skills ready for the day you will need them. It’s both exciting and challenging to work here and thankfully, there’s a great team atmosphere here. All departments come together to treat our patients so in that aspect, you are not alone. I guess that’s why I came here 18 years ago for the experience and never left!
