Respiratory Therapy Technician

Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:

Provides general respiratory therapy procedures to patients as directed by physicians and protocols.  Procedures include, but are not limited to, Non-Invasive positive pressure ventilation management (NPPV), delivery of medicated aerosols, bronchial hygiene therapy, lung expansion therapy, and basic CPR. 

Demonstrates the ability to recognize change in the patient’s condition, make independent judgments, and modify the care as necessary according to departmental standards and approved physician protocols.  Cleans, packages, inventories and maintains all respiratory care equipment.  Checks, delivers, and replenishes respiratory supplies as needed.  Orders department forms and supplies weekly.   Serves as a floor care therapist or equipment technician.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduate of or actively enrolled in an accredited Respiratory Program required.  Successful completion of  the first clinical year preferred Holds either a provisional license to practice, as a Respiratory Therapist, per the Idaho State Board of Medicine or enrolled as a full-time student in a American Medical Association acknowledged Respiratory Therapy program.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers certification from either AHA, ARC or the Military Training Network is required at hire in all units, unless currently certified in ACLS and/or PALS as defined in the SAHS Certification Crosswalk.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Organization's Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions. Demonstrates ability to correctly clean and assemble respiratory equipment and perform the other job functions of the equipment technician, (e.g., patient billing, floor stocking, supply inventory and ordering).

Revenue management: ensures the accuracy of documenting services and supplies provided to the patients. Demonstrates knowledge and skills to competently care for all assigned age groups (Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric as applicable). Performs and monitors clinical effectiveness of general floor therapy modalities only (not critical care qualified).  Demonstrates knowledge and application of non-invasive ventilation (NPPV or BiPAP).
