Overview

Barnes & Noble College is looking for a dynamic, results-driven Retail General Manager to lead a network of community college bookstores across Alabama. In this role, you’ll drive sales, optimize store operations, and ensure an exceptional customer experience by leading a high-performing management team. Building strong relationships with the campus community and maintaining our bookselling culture will be key to your success. Additionally, you will play a vital role in selecting, developing, and evaluating managers and team members, ensuring Barnes & Noble College remains an integral part of the campuses and communities we serve.

Responsibilities

As a Retail General Manager, you are a leader overseeing a network of community college bookstores across Alabama. You are accountable for all aspects of store performance, including financial results, operations, merchandising, talent acquisition, customer service, and campus relations. You will build and maintain strong relationships with the campus communities and Corporate Office partners to ensure each bookstore operates at its highest potential, creating a profitable and engaging experience for the schools we serve. As a people manager, you will take an active role in training, directing, and mentoring your team to foster exceptional customer experiences that enhance bookstore loyalty and drive measurable results. A General Manager must be well-versed in all departments, model outstanding customer service, drive sales, and be a strategic problem solver.

 

Expectations:

Execute developed business strategies and identify opportunities drive sales, increase customer satisfaction, and expand store traffic.Strong delegation, follow up, and management skills to maintain outstanding visual merchandising standards, ensure availability of merchandise, maintain appropriate inventories, and complete projects in a deadline driven industry.Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction and sales through effective scheduling, talent acquisition, training, and development of store team members.Build and maintain strong relationships with campus partners, faculty, and administrators to align bookstore operations with the needs of the school community.Ability to identify creative solutions, learn independently, embrace change, and act as a change agent.Demonstrate a calm demeanor and manage issues appropriately and with respect, setting a positive example to the Store Team at all times.Analyze sales figures, interpret trends, and forecast future sales to manage all controllable costs and keep operations profitable.Ensure standards for quality, customer service, and health and safety are met by providing a safe and clean store environment and implementing loss prevention measures.Foster a fair and equitable workplace, encourage an environment where team members express their concerns and ideas.Provide feedback through counseling and appraisals; relate to others, build rapport, and work collaboratively with customers, campus partners, and the Store Team.

Physical Demands:

Frequent movement within the store to access various departments, areas, and/or products.Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods.Frequent lifting.Occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders.

Qualifications 7+ years’ supervisory experience in a retail setting preferred or a graduate of the Best Seller Program.Bachelors in Business Administration or relevant field preferred.Leadership experience to direct and develop a workforce of managers and sales associates.Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem solving skills to manage campus relationships and corporate initiatives while achieving customer sales and service goals.Familiarity with financial and customer service principles.Basic reading, writing and accounting skills required.Excellent customer service and communication skills needed.Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
