Argonne National Laboratory’s Project Management Office (PMO) Division seeks an experienced and skilled Risk Management Lead to guide and enhance the laboratory’s risk management framework across diverse, high-impact scientific, and operational initiatives. This role offers a unique opportunity to support Argonne’s mission by ensuring the effective identification, analysis, and management of risks across projects and programs critical to advancing science and technology.
Responsibilities
Lead the PMO’s risk management program, providing expertise to develop and implement risk management frameworks, processes, tools, and training.Facilitate risk assessments for projects, programs, and portfolios, ensuring risks are identified, analyzed, and effectively mitigated.Advise leadership and project teams on risk management strategies and process improvements, including developing comprehensive risk management procedures and metrics.Collaborate with institutional stakeholders, scientific investigators, and external customers to address risks that could impact project and laboratory success.Analyze and trend risk-related data to assess performance and identify opportunities for improvement.Develop and maintain policies, tools, guides, and reporting mechanisms to support ongoing risk management efforts.Lead and facilitate regular team risk meetings, fostering collaboration across teams and departments.Attend external risk and project controls working group meetings across the lab complex.Support project and program objectives by reviewing resource-loaded schedules, budgets, and associated documentation to assess risk impacts.Ensure integration of risk management practices with Argonne’s project management requirements.Represent the PMO in inter-organizational and external collaborations to promote effective communication and teamwork across stakeholders.Present risk management process, procedures, and analysis at project reviews.Actively engage in and contribute to the Argonne Mentoring Program.Position Requirements
Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.Strong knowledge and application of project and risk management theories, principles, tools, and techniques, including quantitative risk simulations (i.e., Monte Carlo analysis).Experience in developing, executing, and maintaining risk management plans for large-scale projects.Proven ability to analyze project scopes, schedules, and budgets for risk assessment and mitigation.Demonstrated proficiency in Earned Value Management (EVM) methodologies and compliance with DOE project management requirements.Knowledge of Laboratory policies and practices, project management practices and procedures, and all governing DOE orders, rules, and regulations.Exceptional problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to navigate complex environments.Ability to work independently and take initiative in addressing challenges.Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders, including laboratory leadership, scientific investigators, and project managers.Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and deliver in a fast-paced environment.Proven ability to work effectively with minimal oversight. Travel to other National Laboratories may be required.Preferred Skills:

Education and Professional Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in finance, engineering, statistics, economics, mathematics, management or related field with progressive experience in project risk management.4+ years of relevant experience in project risk management, project controls, and project management.A Risk Management Professional certification from PMI or AACEi (either current or within 1 year within a year of hiring).Job Family
