GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Risk Manager is responsible for overall execution of the Risk Management Plan and for coordination of risk management activities. To assure safe and reliable delivery of health care at Broadlawns Medical Center, the Risk Manager monitors for and identifies risk/loss potential through a variety of methods, analyzes events, develops risk mitigation plans, monitors effectiveness of mitigation plans, and assists with claims reporting if there is a concern for liability.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Reviews incident reports daily, as well as other sources of discovery, and assures that the documentation, investigation, follow up, and level of severity related to events is appropriate. Determines the need for root cause analysis (RCA) and/or performance improvement opportunities related to events or near misses and coordinates with Quality team to initiate.
2. Leads or contributes to the investigation of serious safety/sentinel events (to include review of records to create a timeline, interviewing of staff, evaluation of compliance with policies/procedures) Assists with or leads RCAs.
3. Collaborates with Legal/Compliance when risk for liability/loss is identified. Documents response and/or follow-up actions.
4. Assures that leaders, providers and all staff are trained on incident report entry and event investigation and follow up as appropriate for their role.
5. Mines and maintains data related to event type, severity, frequency, etc. for tracking and trending events that present risk to the organization.
6. Serves as a member of applicable committees with a patient safety focus that would benefit from risk management representation.
7. Provides education on risk management activities.
8. Provides data on incident reporting including tracking and trending to managers, directors and senior leaders.
9. May assist in the completion of and reporting of liability issues and claims in collaboration with Legal.
10. Completes medical record reviews, compares current practice against best practice guidelines and provides recommendations to reduce risk and improve patient care processes.
11. Leads/organize disclosure teams for adverse outcomes when appropriate for disclosure.
12. Contributes to a quarterly Risk Management report.
13. Coordinates and/or conducts annual Risk Assessment in high-risk area or process and implements actions plans from findings.
14. Supports patient advocate with complaint and grievance responses specific to harm (and potential for liability).
15. Identifies potential loss conditions and practices and evaluates their significance. Reports findings and devises remedial action plans.
16. Assists with the development and review of policies and procedures appropriate to the role.
17. Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor's degree in nursing, other clinical field, or risk management
2. Three years previous risk management or quality experience.
3. Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), or Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS). (One designation must be achieved within one year of eligibility of certification.)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Master's degree in nursing, other clinical field, or risk management.
2. Current Iowa license if a nurse or other licensed healthcare professional.
3. Registered Nurse with 3 years experience in clinical nursing.
4. 5 years of experience in insurance claims, risk management, customer relations, legal experience, or as a health care provider, or the equivalent combination of education and experience required.
