Western Alliance Bank (WAL) is seeking a Risk Modeler to contribute to the development of models to support Large Financial Institution (LFI) Readiness. The Risk Modeler will work within the Enterprise Modeling Team (EMT) to help develop, test, and monitor balance sheet and pricing forecasting models. In addition, the Risk Modeler will have opportunities to develop models and analytics for key stakeholders including Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) and Treasury. The Risk Modeler will collaborate closely with other Risk Modelers and report directly to the Risk Modeling Manager. The Risk Modeler also will have opportunities to present research to senior leadership.The Risk Modeler will have expertise in cleaning and manipulating data; analyzing large complex datasets; and building statistical models using programming languages such as Python and R. The Risk Modeler will have an excellent understanding of economics and finance. In addition, industry experience in predictive model development is preferred, but not required.
In this role, you will play an important role in support the Bank’s growth.
Contributes to new model development to support LFI readiness as well as models for key stakeholders including FP&A and Treasury.
Collaborates closely with other Risk Modelers and the Risk Modeling Manager to enhance and test the performance of existing models.
Helps to collect, organize, and clean raw data that will be used to develop or enhance models.
Writes high-quality documentation that clearly describes model objectives, development, performance testing, limitations, and appropriate use.
Assists with model validation and analytical requests from the Model Risk Management Group (MRMG).
Keeps abreast of research and the economic environment to identify how current events may impact model outcomes and the bank's stress scenarios.
Continues to learn about modeling techniques, the banking business, and our customers.
What you'll need:
PhD degree in one of the following: Economics, Statistics, Finance, or Applied Mathematics; Or a master’s degree in the above fields with 3+ years of experience.
Excellent quantitative modeling, analytical, research, and programming skills.
Expertise in the following: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and either Python or R. Experience with SQL is preferred but not required.
Experience with planning and executing empirical research projects.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Experience in the banking industry, particularly in risk modeling, is a bonus, but not required.
