RN, Nurse Manager SCC
Summary The Operating Room Charge Nurse is responsible for coordinating the daily operating room schedule to include posting of cases and staff assignments. The Charge Nurse assigns staff and anticipates, identifies, communicates, and resolves the needs of patients and personnel to ensure the efficient and effective operations of the schedule within the guidelines of OR standards and well as department policies and procedures Essential Duties and Responsibilities + Ensure quality patient care is provided in accordance with established standards + Assign staff and coordinate the posting of all surgical procedures + Coordinate patient needs, staff responsibilities, and surgeon requests as they relate to the running of the OR schedule and functions. + Able to schedule cases in EPIC and ensure cases are appropriate in duration. + Communicate and coordinate with vendor representatives needs, requests and physician orders for upcoming cases. + Ensure that cases are pulled and prepared, instruments and equipment are available, and everything is in working order + Collect information and communicate needed changes for preference card updates or revisions + Communicate effectively with physicians, staff, and the Center Administration. + Enhance continuity of patient care by coordinating the assignments of the operating room + Promote appropriate, effective inter/intra-shift communications + Inform the SCC Perioperative Manager and/or Administrative Coordinator of scheduled activity and alert them of potential problems, training, and equipment needs of staff + Arrange in-services to meet and educational or training needs of staff + Coordinate and communicate all schedule issues and concerns with the appropriate team members, to include surgeons, anesthesia, and surgical technicians. Approval of PAL time. + Participate in the collection and coordination of data for the OR computer system and the monitoring of block booking guidelines and utilization + Analyze workload of assigned unit to determine the employees needed to ensure adequate staffing and to eliminate unnecessary overtime + Coordinate staff breaks/lunches while maintaining a positive flow of the OR schedule + Works as a staff nurse when necessary, demonstrating competence in patient care + Responsible for medication ordering for SCC. Record keeping for DEA monitored CII drugs. Maintain CSOS. + Responsible for training staff on specimen collection and documentation. Ensures specimen collection supplies and requisitions are available. Works with various labs involved to address questions and/or concerns. + High level of engagement with OR and SPD staff. Enforcement of SCC policy and instituting disciplinary measures when necessary. + Annual evaluations for all OR and SPD staff. + Manage payroll for OR and SPD staff. + Promote and support research on caring and health/healing outcomes + Make immediate administrative decisions as necessary in the absence of the SCC Perioperative Manager and/or Executive Administrator + Collaborate with the Perioperative Manager and/or Executive Administrator to make recommendations for changes and the identification of areas requiring staff development + Assist with the orientation of new staff and provide support to all students affiliating with the organization + Initiate quality improvement/risk management activities independently and as directed. + Responsible for make sure all incidents in the OR and SPD are reported and documented on Incident Report forms. Follow up on incident resolutions and performance improvement when necessary. + Monitor department to ensure complete compliance with established department, unit, and hospital policies and procedures, accrediting agency requirements, as well as objectives regarding quality assurance, safety, and environmental and infection control; interpret and explain these policies, procedures, and objectives to subordinate personnel, patients, medical staff, and the public as appropriate + Document and submit follow-up of problem-solving to the SCC Perioperative Manager and/or Executive Administrator involving various complaints related to surgical services' clinical activities, serious incidents, and violations of the Service Excellence Standards and Expectations + Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in- services + Maintains current knowledge of and ensures compliance with all regulatory and professional standards of care which includes HFAP, DMV, CMS, IHI, AORN, CDC, WHO, ACLS, CPR etc. + Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care Supervisory Responsibilities Reports to: SCC Perioperative Manager and/or Executive Administrator Supervises: Staff under the assigned shift Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Experience: 5+ years as an RN in Surgical Services with 2+ years in a supervisory/management role; applicants must have a strong working knowledge of equipment used in the operating room, including how to safely utilize and maintain the electrosurgical unit, various light sources, scopes, sterilizers, surgical tables, etc. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Applicant must hold a current license to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia or compact state. Additionally, applicant must currently hold and maintain BLS certification; preferred applicants will hold and maintain a current ACLS certification. CNOR is also preferred, but not required
