NURSING SUMMARY/ PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Aultman Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional nurse that provides direct, primary nursing care to patients/residents.  The RN delegates and coordinates patient care, based upon a documented assessment of the patient’s/resident’s needs.   The RN supervises the care provided by individuals such as licensed practical nurses, patient care technicians/state tested nursing assistants/nurse aides, medical assistants, and etc., if applicable.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred. Current, active licensure as a Registered Nurse through the Ohio Board of Nursing. Maintain current, active BLS certification through the American Heart Association. Certification preferred for RNs meeting applicable certification eligibility requirements. Membership in professional nursing organization preferred.

Proficient computer skills to complete tasks as required. DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the directors of surgical services, the surgical RN is responsible for the safety and planning of care of the patient while in the surgical department. The RN assists with surgical procedures in circulating and scrub duties. Assists in orientation, training and education of personnel. The RN takes call as assigned to meet department needs.

Responsibilities & Expectations

   Circulator Role

Assures proper surgical technique and practices are followed in the OR in compliance with AORN standards and recommended practices, and hospital policy. Directs, oversees, and /or assists other surgery personnel in the care of the surgical patient. Ensures care of the patient through proper identification of The patient The correct surgical site Allergies Other items per surgical checklist Performs patient chart review prior to each surgery and ensures appropriate documentation and test results are available. Assists the surgeon and anesthesia personnel as needed. Assures the proper supplies/equipment needed for the surgical case are available and in proper working condition. Assists with the proper positioning of the patient. Appropriately preps the patient for surgical intervention. Initiates and ensures compliance to Surgical Checklist and Surgical Time Outs. Assists in sponge, needle, and instrument counts per policy and reports discrepancies. Identifies, labels and cares for surgical specimens per policy. Documents care in surgical record completely and accurately. Able to access and enter data into computer systems. Serves on committees as requested by the Director. Communicates with OR charge, managers and directors to facilitate daily schedule. Correctly pulls necessary items for daily surgical cases. Responsible for checking email and maintaining education via online learning assignments (LMS) and unit competencies. Assists in maintenance of surgeon preference cards based on current physician practices.

 

Other duties as assigned.

 

RN in SCRUB ROLE, in addition to circulator duties

Scrubs, gowns, and gloves using sterile technique. Correctly set-up and open surgical suite with necessary instruments and materials. Arranges scrub table according to type of procedures and surgeon preference. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon during the case in instrumentation, sponges, suture and supplies. Appropriately cares for and handles surgical instrumentation. Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Working Conditions

 

Work eight, ten or twelve hours a day. Shifts are scheduled or changed due to the staffing needs of the unit/department based upon volume and acuity, with 24 hour coverage.  This unit requires 24/7 coverage. Shifts are variable to volume of department. Rotation as needed. Work weekends and holidays as assigned. Every third weekend and two holidays a year, in a group rotation. Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain

adequate floor coverage.

On call coverage is assigned to cover the department schedule. Staff may be assigned to different locations within the foundation. Contact with blood and body fluid.
