MEDICAL ONCOLOGY:
This 43-bed unit delivers quality, patient-focused care for a variety of medical and surgical specialties, such as endocrinology, metabolic, gastroenterology and medical telemetry. Staff receive specialized training in urology, oncology, hematology, phase 1 clinical trials and palliative care. Nurses have the opportunity to receive additional training and support in administering chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Specialty certification is encouraged.

Patients range from adolescents to older adults. The interdisciplinary team includes specialty physicians, pharmacists, dieticians, physical therapists, case managers, social workers, pain management specialists and nurses.

CRITICAL CARE:
At Sanford Medical Center, the care of critically-ill adult patients occurs in three separate critical care units that are covered by the same nursing staff. Critical Care 2000 is a 12-bed pulmonary/medical critical care unit. Critical Care 3000 is a 15-bed trauma, surgical and neurocritical care unit. Critical Care 2800 is a 12-bed acuity adaptable unit for cardiothoracic and vascular surgery patients.

Acuity adaptable beds allow patients to receive care at all acuity levels in one environment. For example, a post-coronary bypass patient can recover after the operation, receive critical care, transition to telemetry status, and then be discharged all in one room. The staff in this area is comprised of a mixed team of critical care nurses and surgical nurses. Surgical and pulmonary intensivists also work collaboratively with physicians and this department to facilitate all interdisciplinary needs.

The units are staffed 24/7 with in-house intensivist services and daily coverage by three specialty services: pulmonary, surgical and neurocritical care. The staff works closely with the intensivist, surgical critical care team and neurocritical care team as well as other members of the interdisciplinary team to provide goal directed care.
