POSITION OVERVIEW: Becoming a Bus Washer for Regional Transit Service is an excellent way to start a career with one of the nation's top Transit Authorities. Through the cleaning of buses, you will be involved in a team that is critical to our customers' health and safety, along with providing them with an overall satisfying customer experience. WORK HOURS: Evening hours, 5:30 PM to 2:00 AM. Days off vary. COMPENSATION: $20.80 per hour This is a union position associated with the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 282. All work is picked by seniority; therefore, specific work hours/days cannot be guaranteed. BENEFITS INCLUDE: + Health Benefits – Medical, Dental, Vision + Pension + On-site 24/7 Wellness Center + Deferred Compensation + Paid weekly + Employee Assistance Program (Counseling, Health Advocacy, Financial & Legal Consultation, Health Coaching, Virtual Concierge, Discounts) + Well-Being Program ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: + Perform thorough exterior and interior cleaning of buses, ensuring vehicles meet health, safety, and appearance standards. + Sanitize high-touch surfaces to promote passenger health and safety. + Operate automated or manual washing equipment, including pressure washers, scrubbers, and vacuums. + Refuel buses following established safety protocols. + Check and maintain proper levels of essential fluids, including oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid. + Document and report any maintenance or fluid discrepancies to appropriate personnel. + Safely maneuver and park buses in assigned locations on the RTS campus. + Ensure buses are positioned correctly and ready for service the following day. + Adhere to campus traffic and parking guidelines to maintain a safe and organized environment. + Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE). + Conduct pre-operation checks of equipment and tools to ensure safe functioning. + Report any safety hazards or equipment malfunctions immediately. + Work closely with other maintenance team members to ensure timely preparation of buses for service. + Communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers regarding any operational or safety concerns. + Assist in training or mentoring new employees as needed. + Inspect buses for visible damage or issues during cleaning and fueling, and report findings to the maintenance team. + Maintain accurate records of completed tasks, including cleaning, fueling, and fluid checks. + Meet established timelines for bus preparation to ensure readiness for scheduled routes. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: + Bus Washers will be required to fulfill the functions of a Bus Placer on a fill-in basis when a Placer is absent. This includes, but not limited to, directing the placement of buses based on company requirements. Must be able to take accurate location information and consult with various sources to meet pull-out requirements. At times, this job is computer assisted, and the successful candidate must possess computer operation skills. + Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: + Valid NY State Driver's license. + Must be able to obtain a Class B permit with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction prior to start date. + Clean driving record. + Ability to work as a team. + Strong communication skills. + Dependability and punctuality. + Honesty. + Ability to follow directions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT: + Working in extreme weather conditions, including summer heat and winter cold. + Functioning effectively in a noisy work environment. + Hearing oncoming vehicles, horns, and verbal signals in and between buses, even without a line of sight. + Performing tasks at a high rate of speed. + Operating in dark and dimly lit work environments. + Navigating confined spaces. + Maintaining balance and stability in wet and slippery conditions. + Standing for extended periods on hard and uneven surfaces. + Frequently moving between standing and stooping positions. + Bending, squatting, crouching, stretching, and lifting arms and hands overhead. + Lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds. + Kneeling on wet, flat, hard surfaces. + Walking and moving quickly through buses over distances of several hundred feet.
