Safety Director

Make a difference.

Purpose

·         Establish, implement, and maintain organizational policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulatory agencies including the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and others. Lead a culture of safety awareness throughout the organization.  

 

Responsibilities

·         Ensure policies, procedures and related training programs are implemented and comply with all Federal and State Safety and Health regulations.

·         Formulate company-specific general safety policies and procedures to be followed by all personnel; consult with all departments on the design and use of equipment, warehouse facilities, fire prevention and safety, and fleet programs.

·         Inspect work environments to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards; recommend corrective or preventive measures where indicated.

·         Manage relationship with third party vendor for Department of Transportation (DOT) driver compliance to include driver hiring requirements, driver qualification files, and DOT required drug and alcohol testing.

·         Participate in the investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperate in the preparation of material and evidence for use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations; compile and submit required Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports (OSHA 300 logs); remain current on health and safety requirements.

·         Prepare studies and analyses of work-related accident causes and hazards to health for use by management and outside agencies.

·         Serve as a resource to District Safety Committees, providing educational content, direction, and analysis to assist in the local efforts to create greater awareness and compliance.

·         Devise, supervise, and coordinate training programs or media to increase proficiency in safe practice and promote safety consciousness.

·         Integrate safety programs with Workers’ Compensation cost reduction efforts.

·         Maintain working knowledge of DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations for ground and air shipments.

 

Requirements

Minimum

·         5 years’ experience: in related fields establishing, implementing, and evaluating corporate safety programs

·         High school diploma or GED

Preferred

·         Four-year degree

·         Certifications in safety and/or fleet management

·         Knowledge of building management functions including equipment and processes

·         Knowledge of current health and safety regulations

·         Ability to communicate health and safety programs to all levels throughout the organization

·         Ability to produce and submit accurate reports to regulators in a timely manner

·         Ability to keep corporate management informed of health and safety exposures

Working Conditions

Office environment. Extensive travel required. Investigate potentially unhealthy, hazardous, or unsafe working conditions. Perform physical tasks normally associated with office functions as needed.
