Safety Specialist – Plant Watson
This position serves as the primary resource in administering the safety programs and related initiatives for an industrial plant workforce. It ensures compliance with all internal and external safety policies and programs, OSHA and NFPA regulations, and procedures while implementing new initiatives to improve safety performance. It requires working with management and employees to communicate, implement, and monitor safety and health programs. In addition, this position is responsible for monitoring and maintaining plant’s fire protection equipment. It requires partnering with Corporate Safety and Training groups, Health and Medical Services, and various other entities sharing best practices and overseeing new safety initiatives. This position serves as a member of the Safety and Wellness Team providing guidance. Supports plant management in the implementation of the Southern Company safety and health program.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health or relevant field preferred
- Industrial Plant experience required; power generation plant experience preferred
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable OSHA and NFPA regulations and related safety experience preferred
- Serve as Fire Protection System Owner
- Maintain Safety and Fire Protection Budget
- Working knowledge of industrial safety and health, including accident prevention techniques, personal protection equipment, behavior-based safety and engineering control measures
- Knowledge of plant processes and equipment, work methods and procedures
- Ability to identify, analyze and resolve safety issues/concerns
- Ability to develop safety and health programs and guidelines/processes to minimize hazards and injuries in the workplace
- Demonstrated proficiency in developing and leading safety meetings, safety and compliance related training
-Demonstrated ability to develop presentations and speak publicly to a variety of audiences
- Ability to provide safety leadership to plant safety and wellness team and safety advocate
- Proficient in leading and participating in Event Learnings
- Strong planning, organizing, coordinating, problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Experience with data manipulation (creating reports, trending data, pivot tables)
Job Responsibilities
- Assist in the development, coordination, and implementation of plant safety and wellness strategies, policies, initiatives, and action plans
- Monitor and assess the effectiveness of the plant’s safety, health, and fire programs
- Identify safety training needs, assists in program development, coordinate, monitor, and deliver training as needed
- Provide support and participate in HP Learning Events
- Provide guidance and ensure effectiveness of the plant safety and wellness team and safety advocate
- Promote safety and health through actions and effective communications with all levels of employees and management
- Coordinating and facilitating various safety and health training classes, compiling and presenting safety and health information and status updates to large audiences, as well as one on one training as needed
- Complete annual risk and self-assessments and develop action plan as needed
- Oversight of the STEP program
- Monitors safety goals, enters data into goal tracking programs, and provides progress/status updates
- Performs or assists with audits/assessments with strong attention to detail
- Must be available for callouts, some nights, weekends, and holiday work required and minimal overnight travel
