Safety Manager
POSITION PURPOSE: Western has a goal create an ongoing “ZERO INJURY CULTURE”. The individual recruited for this position must be able to effectively lead and assist in the pursuit of this goal. Western will benefit from a safety professional that has the following attributes: + Trust and credibility with management and the work force + Knowledge of the technical aspects of the scope of work and the trades performing job tasks + Ability to lead and motivate employees to believe in achieving a zero-injury culture + Ability to determine the root causes that lead to injuries/incidents and assist in the development of safety plans/initiative to eliminate and control risks + Leadership and teambuilding skills to guide Western branch leadership teams to identify and achieve safety goals for the entire branch + Ability to problem solve difficult situations to improve accountability and make an impact in correcting/changing behaviors + Communicate clearly with Safety Department management on all travel, housing, PTO, and other personal issues + Physical stamina to travel to company branch sites and ability to perform physical tasks: climbing ladders / stairs, accessing elevated areas and roof decks, utilize fall protection equipment, working in cold/hot weather conditions, walking on uneven surfaces and rough terrain PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: + Communicate and work closely with Executive leadership teams to plan and execute safety initiatives and safety goals of the associated division, region, or branch + Coordinate safety related activities, training, meetings, etc. with branch teams to ensure compliance with Western’s Loss Control Manual + Plan and schedule trips to the assigned Western branch locations in advance to ensure consistency of visits and cost-effective travel. Utilize and follow the “Safety Manager Branch Trip” outline + Operate within the budget – treat the company’s money like your own + Assist in the development of corp. training programs, administrative controls, and PPE resources + Participate in the development of handbooks/manual, safety meeting outlines, field communication memos, audiovisual presentations, and hands on field training for Western foremen + Participate in the organizational development and planning of the Western Safety Training program + Assist in development of the project Site Specific Safety Plans and required postings + Conduct high quality and relevant Toolbox safety meetings with all site employees on subjects relevant to site specific work that is being performed + Ensure that all site personnel have been trained to perform all job tasks per the OSHA\Western and in compliance with Federal and State standards + Assist the branches identify and comply with governmental compliance issues regarding OSHA, DOT, EPA, NFPA and other regulatory agencies + Conduct documented project and branch warehouse/building safety audits and communicate findings, hazards, and corrective action plan to all branch teams + Distribute copies of the “Project Safety Audit” to branch teams: Superintendents, Br. Manager, Regional Managers, Division VP’s, and the corp. Safety Director + Respond to branch requests promptly when assistance has been requested to address safety concerns + Attend project Daily Huddles – JHA’s to support and coach foremen on the purpose and impact of those meetings + Ensure that all project field safety paperwork is completed including daily Huddles, safe work permits, equipment inspections, project safety audits, and all other administrative documentation + Investigate and document all incident and injury reports. Complete incident reports in detail and of high quality. Conduct Root Cause Analysis meetings to ensure immediate and basic causes are found. Identify project trends and create a safety improvement plans + Prepare Safety Alerts for all recordable injuries, serious property damage, equipment recalls, or other important events that have a potential to impact Western employees + Ability to case manage injuries and treatment methods within the first aid level. Work with 3rd party occupational medical providers to provide employees the best care and when feasible to keep injuries at the first aid level with no DART days impacting the company + Work with the Western Risk Management team to analyze claims, identify trends, and recommend corrective actions to reduce DART rates and claims costs Requirements + Bilingual in Spanish – Ability to read, write, and speak fluently + Bachelor’s Degree in Safety or related field preferred + Safety Experience related to the construction industry (3-5 years preferred) + CHST, STS, OHS related training preferred + OSHA 30 hour, First Aid/CPR/AED required + Ability to work with a bi-lingual workforce + Ability to travel 75% + Strong interpersonal skills + Willingness to continue education + Position is exposed to construction and environmental areas: dusty atmosphere’s, cold/heat weather conditions, accessing ladders, elevator hoists, elevated work platforms, and other construction related environments and conditions Benefits + Compensation Bonus Opportunity + Vehicle + Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision) + Retirement Plan (401k, IRA) + Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D) + Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays) + Short Term & Long Term Disability + Training & Development + Family Leave (Maternity)
