Safety Officer Assistant

As the Safety Officer Assistant, you will be a vital member at one of our Alaskan processing facilities that will provide administrative and technical support to the Safety Officer in ensuring a safe and healthy working environment. You will assist with safety training, accident investigations, documentation, and other safety-related tasks. This position plays a vital role in supporting the Safety Officer's efforts to promote workplace safety and prevent injuries. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

The responsibilities of the position include the following:  

Follow all OSHA/AKOSH/EPA standards and company policies while on company property as well as while operating a company vehicle off property.  Assist processing all worker compensation claims with insurance company.  Assist the safety Coordinator in processing and maintaining OSHA 300 Logs.  Complete daily, weekly, and monthly site audits, site inspections.  Communicate with Safety Coordinator and Plant Manager any safety concerns.  Review, revise, and edit standard operating procedures regarding general industry site safety.  File near misses and first report of injury, complete accident investigations.  Identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices in the workplace and report to Safety Coordinator. Document safety training for new employee orientation or recertifications.  Assist with annual chemical inventory and audit SDSs.  Assist Safety Coordinator with maintenance of OSHA Logs and post OSHA 300A forms in accordance with regulations.  Assist with emergency evacuation drill once very season.  Communicate during weekly safety meetings any unsafe work conditions.  Support & cultivate a safety culture for the facility  Monitor worker compensation claims  Assist in development of controls for identified hazards, coordinate the implementation of controls from hazard analysis.  Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of hazard control systems, policies, SOPs. Other duties are to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

Communication: Effective communication with Safety Officer, employees, management, and regulatory agencies. Organization: Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload. Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy and completeness of safety-related documentation. Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and assist in resolving safety-related issues. Teamwork: Collaborating effectively with the Safety Officer and other team members. Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing safety regulations and workplace conditions. 

Education and Experience  

High School Diploma/GED or equivalent is preferred.  3-6 months’ experience working in general industrial safety standards.  Basic knowledge of general industry & construction safety standards.  Safety/Risk management experience preferred.  Position requires driven machinery certifications such as a forklift and telehandler which in turn requires a valid driver’s license. First Responder/CPR certification required within 3 months of hire date. OSHA 10 and 30 hours preferred but not required.  Previous experience in Seafood or Manufacturing preferred. 

Work Environment and Schedule   

The Safety Officer Assistant is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to a full spectrum of outside weather conditions from wet/humid conditions with extreme cold. Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud at times.  Position requires onsite presence at one of our Alaska processing facilities, and the ability to travel, including at times in remote locations.    

Physical Demands   

While performing duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, handle or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Travel across Silver Bay locations will be required, some of which are in remote areas of Alaska. While onsite at Silver Bay production locations, the employee will be working in a loud, wet, and noisy seafood processing plant environment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
