The Opportunity:
Reporting to the Sr Manager Safety & Security, this position is expected to be visible throughout the manufacturing areas, interface with employees concerning health & safety, assess hazards, & implement practices to reduce hazards. The Specialist, Safety will use a proactive & collaborative approach when working with operations, management, & other support groups to create a healthy and safe work environment. This position has responsibility for supporting safety, emergency response, safety training programs, policies, & procedures to ensure the mill complies with all applicable health & safety corporate initiatives & regulations to achieve an accident-free workplace.

Integrate continuous safety system improvements by driving employee engagement to achieve desired resultsParticipate in the planning & implementation of communication strategies to deliver accurate, consistent, & timely information on business safety issues & employee concernsPlan & implement safety policies & procedures in compliance with WestRock policies, local, & federal OSHA regulationsInspect facilities, machinery, & safety equipment to identify & correct potential hazards, & to ensure safety regulation complianceReview employee safety programs to determine adequacyWill be responsible for driving the preparation activities for the Performance Standard audit with support from senior safety leadersThis individual will act as the facilitator for all Performance Standard team meetings and development of corrective action plans to resolve GAPs identified during the mill self-assessments and audits. Develop / and facilitate safety meeting presentations.Serve as a training facilitator for compliance topicsParticipate as a Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) Advocate Interview employees to obtain information about work environments, incidents, & feedback for workplace improvementsAssist with coordination of industrial hygiene programBe responsible for helping manage the SDS system within the mill this includes chemical approvals, uploading of SDSs and annual auditing of inventory. Support the Emergency Response TeamPerform field High Risk Task audits and develop corrective action plans for resolution of findings. Participate in project reviews & management of change to ensure health & safety issues are adequately addressed prior to the startup of the process. Involvement in operational readiness reviews & approval of written operating proceduresBe a resource for incident investigations - identify root causes of near misses, injuries & property damage to prevent future events of the same nature. Be a resource to operations & support groups so that incident reports are entered in a timely manner & corrective actions completedThis position will be required to work all annual and daily outages as scheduled. This may require working 12 hour shifts up to 21 days straight when needed. These shifts can include nights and weekends. This position will be responsible for taking call for the mill every three weeks.
What you need to succeed:
High School diploma or G.E.D. 5+ yrs. SAFETY experience at a paper mill or related business experienceThorough knowledge of safety standards and methodologiesSpecialist, Safety must be able to work in extreme hot & cold temperatures & industrial environments including routinely climbing ladders & stairsStrong technical understanding of Federal & State Safety & Health regulationsExperience working with unions preferredExperience working with regulatory agencies on behalf of company required. Experience working with Corporate EH&S group is a mustElectrical experience is a plusMust be proficient with Microsoft office suiteProven record of critical thinking and problem-solvingDemonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage and inspire others to comply with safety policies and standardsInspire others to develop themselves and seek out continuous learning opportunities by serving as a role model and seeking out personal developmental opportunitiesGovernment or professional training and compliance courses (e.g., OSHA 30-hour training) are preferred
