Safety Specialist

Position Description

This position is responsible for providing EHS support for Terminal operations to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, local, regional, and corporate rules, policies, procedures, and regulations.


Essential Duties:

Assist the EHS Regional Manager with development and implementation of all site, corporate, and regulatory EHS requirements.Support terminal environmental permits, including air, SWPPP, and waste activities, and provide guidance to ensure compliance of terminal operations.Supervise and direct field compliance with applicable regulations and company policies - including contractors, visitors, and KM employees.Implement and support SQE (Safety, Quality, and Environmental) initiatives and directives.Ensure compliance with regulatory and company policies, procedures, rules and standard operating procedure.Support EHS improvement initiatives across assigned coverage area (e.g., ergonomics, industrial hygiene, engineering controls, PPE, training, etc.).Provide support for the incident/injury reporting and tracking system, including report generation and reviews concerning workplace injuries/illnesses, vehicle accidents, and other undesired occurrences.Participate in site incident investigations/root cause analysis to ensure corrective action is taken to improve EHS, Maintenance and Operations practices and ensure safety-related incident investigations are effective and implemented in a timely manner.Complete all required inspections and enter work orders for corrections as required.Participate as required in and EHS audits and maintain all EHS required documents and records.Perform field walks to identify and address any unsafe operations/conditions and collaborate with field personnel to correct.Provide support for the industrial hygiene monitoring program.Must be willing and able to respond to site incidents and other facility emergencies after hours to participate in and assist with case management and mitigation of various emergencies.Perform other duties assigned by the Regional EHS Manager.

Position Requirements

Education & Experience: 

Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field. Industrial Hygiene/Safety Management certifications & training a plus.Three to five years’ experience in a terminal or petrochemical environment with working knowledge of jobsite/ construction safety, incident investigations, OSHA regulations, fire safety, and air monitoring instrumentation.Ability to attain TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) as issued by TSA (Transportation Security Administration).Have in-depth knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations pertaining to safe work practices in an industrial setting – i.e. 29 CFR 1910 and 29 CFR 1926 standards.

Ability to pass a background check and drug/alcohol screen upon job offer.Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.Ability to take initiative, exhibit self-direction and work with co-workers to accomplish defined goals in a fast paced, challenging environment.Must be able to work with a team, give directions to subordinates, keep the required work schedule, focus on attention to details, and implement safety requirements.

Physical demands:

Must be able to perform the physical requirements including but not limited to walking up and down stairs/ladders, negotiating uneven surfaces and carrying up to 50 lbs.Ability to work overwater.Ability to travel between other facilities. Some overnight travel is required.

 Working conditions:

Must be willing and able to work in an office and field environment.Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multi-task.Must be able to withstand extreme weather conditions as this position will require some outside work activities.Must be willing to work flexible shifts.Must be willing and able to carry a company provided cell phone and respond as needed 24/7.
