Purpose
The Safety Specialist II ensures a safe work environment for students and staff through the anticipation, recognition, and evaluation of health and physical hazards associated with University Housing and Dining (UHD) operations. Assist in the identification and implementation of hazard controls based on evaluation. Interpret and implement regulations, policies, and procedures. Provide professional guidance to enhance the safety culture within UHD while providing 5-star customer service.
Responsibilities
Perform safety hygiene assessments/inspections under the direction of the Associate Director of Occupation and Environmental Safety and Construction within UHD Facilities. Examples include evaluating noise, ventilation, and lighting; ergonomics, completing risk assessments, and evaluating the proper use of PPE.
Respond to reported safety related concerns to assess and recommend corrective actions. Conduct accident investigations and safety inspections within UHD.
Maintain safety related data base information and update safety related records on a regular bases. Conduct routine inspections of UHD Facilities for potential safety concerns and recommend corrective actions.
Respond to incidents, spills, and odor calls at UHD Facilities. Consults with subject matter experts when response requires specific expertise.
Assist the Associate Director of Occupational and Environmental Safety/Construction in the daily operations of the Safety Office with UHD.
Conducts safety related training for all areas within UHD.
Contributes as a team member to UHD with competent performance, demonstrates leadership and respects other employees. Provides exceptional customer service and conducts work safely.
Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in engineering, a natural science, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or a related field.
At least two years environmental health and safety or related experience.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred QualificationsMaster's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
Five or more years of experience working in a directly related field.
Experience working in a university setting within an Environmental Health and Safety department.
Work experience with mold, indoor air quality, and/or asbestos.
Demonstrated effective interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills.
Driving RequiredThis job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
Salary Range$60,000+ depending on qualifications
