School Counselor

The Theresa Paplin School is a non-diploma bound, New York State certified special education school that serves adolescents and young adults who are dually diagnosed with a serious emotional disturbance as well as a developmental disability. Students live at our Ottilie Residential Treatment Facility or attend as day students referred by New York City Department of Education school districts. The school teaches functional, academic and vocational skills based on each individual’s abilities.

 

 Responsibilities:

Person responsible for overall treatment of the assigned cases which includes reviewing and developing the  Individual Education Program (IEP), implementation of this plan and providing mandated counseling for students in accordance to the official IEP.

 

Attend all IEP conferences/meetings for students on caseload and functions as the child’s advocate serving as a liaison between the agency and the school including participation in suspension conference.

 

      Prepares IEP documents according to agency and SED guidelines.

 

Acts as liaison between, families and resident including the forwarding and requesting of all reports, documentation, etc..  Liaison with police in cases of missing persons.

 

Cooperates with the Education, Vocational, recreational Services to act as a liaison between these services and agencies.

 

Maintain effective communication and rapport with students, staff, unit personnel, family resources and act as liaison with unit Social Workers in sharing pertinent information

 

Provide crisis intervention services as needed and completing parent notifications for emergency situations.

 

Support teachers in addressing the individual needs of students and participate in the school intake process.

 

Attend TPR and Discharge meetings as school representative and participate in multi-disciplinary Treatment Team conferences.

 

Qualifications

 

Master’s Degree in Social Work, School Counseling or Mental Health Counseling

 

Three years of clinical experience in a mental health or school setting and experience with treating adolescents preferred.

 

Acceptable background clearance check through State central register and compliance with health regulations for physical examination and mantoux testing
