Scientist, Modeler Process Science – 1 Year Fixed Term Contract
Site Name: Belgium-Rixensart Posted Date: Feb 26 2025 Job purpose: We are seeking a highly skilled Scientist specializing in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to join our Manufacturing Science & Technology (MSAT) Process Science laboratory. This role will focus on both drug substance (upstream and downstream) and drug product process development, with an emphasis second-generation pharmaceutical product as well as optimizing and troubleshooting current processes. The Modeler will work across MSAT teams, integrated directly on projects, to deliver advanced modeling approaches (with a focus on CFD – Computational fluid dynamics). CFD modelling will help develop scale-up/scale-down of our Drug Substance/Drug Product processes to reduce the number of small-scale runs, reduce noncommercial batches in commercial facility and robust processes. The definition of those models is therefore a key asset to improve risk assessment, deliver more robust processes and reduce costs. Your responsibilities: Model development : Application of mechanistic, data driven and hybrid modelling in process design, control strategy identification and advanced process monitoring & control for biological processes, with a focus on CFD applications. Deploy advanced CFD techniques to develop and validate computational models that support the design and optimization of drug manufacturing processes, including mixing, thawing, heat transfer, and mass transfer chemical reactions. Develop in silico models and digital tools to streamline experimental efforts supporting process development, transfer to manufacturing facilities and process troubleshooting. Support development of CFD methods related to new technologies. Process Optimization : Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify process challenges and leverage CFD simulations to propose solutions that improve yield, efficiency, and product quality while reducing costs. Experimental Validation/Verification : Design and execute experimental studies in collaboration with laboratory teams to validate CFD models, ensuring alignment with real-world manufacturing conditions and gathering necessary information to perform modelling. Correlation of CFD results with physical testing results and making improvements in models. Troubleshooting Support : Provide expert troubleshooting support for manufacturing issues by analyzing CFD results to identify root causes of process inefficiencies or failures. Documentation and Reporting : Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations of findings, effectively communicating complex data to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Makes sound scientific/technical based on a balance of data, analysis and experience. Autonomously organize the workload delivering in line with MSAT timing expectations and priorities. Collaboration : Work closely with project scientists, engineers, and external partners to integrate CFD insights into project workflows and manufacturing strategies. Work in close contact and collaborate with TRD (Technical Research and Development) department as well as MDS (Medicine Development & Supply) department to ensure alignment in tools & methodologies used for process modeling. Participate in the MSAT Process Science team core meeting to ensure the cascade/escalation of information is done properly and to proactively capture new need from across the network. Be updated on the latest trends and advancements on CFD and simulations solutions, both on software and infrastructure items and eventually share them with MSAT network. Why you? Basic Qualifications: We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals: MS OR BS with 3+ years of experience with a degree in Engineer, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, or related scientific field and 1+ year of experience in CFD. Proficiency in written and spoken English. A basic knowledge of other languages such as Italian or French is an additional asset. Proven proficiency in CFD software ANSYS FLUENT is necessary, knowledge of other CFD software is desirable but not necessary. Strong background in fluid mechanics principles, turbulence modelling, finite volume method, heat transfer, and mass transfer principles. Strong meshing capabilities with grid generation techniques including mesh discretization. Familiarity with statistical techniques and QbD principles. Good knowledge of coding and programming languages such as C++, python, MATLAB, or other script-based codes. Good know-how on vaccines and or bio-pharmaceutical process. Excellent communication skills for presenting complex information clearly. Strong problem-solving capabilities and ability to work independently as well as part of a team, taking a new perspective on existing solutions. Ability to work independently and as part of a MSAT Process Science team. *Li-GSK #VaccinesRD If you have a disability and require assistance during the course of the selection process, you will have the opportunity to let us know what specific assistance you require in order to make suitable arrangements.
