The Position

Scientist 3 – Translational Medicine, Oncology

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

The Translational Medicine organization at Genentech has a vision to transform patient care through borderless, innovative, and rigorous translational science that will catalyze the development of new medicines, accelerate drug development timelines, and discover new therapeutic strategies. To fulfill our vision, we recruit talented and highly motivated scientists to develop and execute innovative biomarker and diagnostic strategies to drive clinical development through all phases of the portfolio, and conduct foundational disease-oriented translational research to maximize our scientific and clinical impact.

We are seeking a dedicated and independent Scientist 3 to lead lab-based translational research and discovery efforts in oncology.

The Opportunity:

This is a hands-on, lab-based position that requires close collaboration with colleagues and departments across multiple functions in Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED), including Research Oncology, Cellular & Tissue Genomics, Computational Sciences, Functional Genomics, Sequencing, and Proteomics. As an integral member of this dynamic team, you will lead efforts in:

Designing and executing in vitro and in vivo experiments to validate biological and therapeutic hypotheses derived from clinical biomarker data, real-world data, and other sources; elucidating mechanisms of action to enable in-depth understanding of fundamental disease biology

Identifying, evaluating, and validating novel cell-based and biochemical assays, genome engineering techniques, and multi-omic assays (including, but not limited to, single cell platforms) that enable hypotheses testing at scale

Collaborating with subject matter experts from across gRED to synthesize, integrate, and interpret experimental and computational findings to inform decision-making on key projects and programs

Independently build new connections and collaborations with colleagues across diverse functional areas to enable access to new technologies, methods, or data to drive translational innovation

Who You Are:

You hold a Ph.D. degree in Cancer Biology, Cell/Molecular Biology, Immunology, or related disciplines. Candidates with a BA/BS or MS degree in similar fields, with combined 6+ or  4+ additional years of related experiences, respectively, will also be considered

Deep understanding of cancer biology, genetics, and oncogenic signaling pathways, with multi-disciplinary expertise in cancer signaling and/or  immuno-oncology fields, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications or patents

Demonstrated experience in independently leading lab-based research projects involving a wide repertoire of experimental techniques including, but not limited to, cellular/genome manipulation and engineering, perturbation screens, conventional and spectral flow cytometry, biochemistry and cell/molecular biology, cell signaling assays, imaging, and single cell workflows

Efficient time management and prioritization, with the ability to simultaneously progress multiple projects in parallel

Possess a thoughtful and meticulous approach to experimental design, execution, and documentation, bringing scientific rigor and creativity to problem solving. Highly organized, detail-oriented and adaptable, with excellent written/oral communication skills.
