SCIENTIST/ENGINEER - SENIOR (ERDC):
Bowhead is seeking a Scientist/Engineer – Senior to join our team in Vicksburg, MS to support our US Army Corps of Engineers customer at the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) for a recently awarded Environmental Lab contract. The ERDC Environmental Lab contract is tasked with satisfying Army and Department of Defense (DoD) requirements which may include: biological and environmental studies, analysis of aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna, as well as abiotic features (e.g., sediment, soil, and groundwater), biological processes, environmental research on imperiled, invasive, and keystone species, research on dredged material, water quality assessment, and basic and applied environmental research to determine the adverse effects of civil works activities. The Senior Scientist will be responsible for benthic invertebrate recovery study after sand mining activities at Sandbridge Shoal, VA. Trends in benthic assemblages will be evaluated using a combination of univariate and multivariate statistical methods. Univariate measure include commonly reported parameters such as total abundance, taxa richness and total biomass. The univariate technique will provide an overview of spatial and temporal trends within the system. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test will be used to compare total macroinvertebrate abundance (log (n+1) transformed and species richness (untransformed) between areas surveyed and pre- and post-sand mining dredging activities.
Responsibilities Conducting multivariate analyses on the benthic infaunal abundance data to determine potential differences between sites (dredged vs. non-dredged).Analyzing community species composition by non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) ordinations followed by Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) using PRIMER-E Software.Preparing written report(s) that include the results of all statistical analysis.Performing a variety of laboratory and field procedures using established synthetic methods and techniques as well as conducting experiments and collecting field samples.Conducting and interpreting routine data as well as collecting a variety of samples.Developing testing procedures; and directing activities of other contractors in laboratory while maintaining accurate and complete files. Qualifications A PhD in Marine Biology, Science or a related field is required in addition to at least seven to ten (7 to 10) years of experience in the field or related areaQualified candidates must complete Level 1 OPSEC Training within 30 calendar days of contract awardQualified candidates must have or be able to complete the AT Level I awareness training within 30 days of beginning workMust have knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures as related to biological and environmental studiesIntermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPointAbility to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contactsStrong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.Frequent standing, bending, walking, and kneeling in warehouse and workshop environments.Comfortable working in varying conditions, including temperature fluctuations and noise.Manual dexterity for operating tools and equipment with precision.
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIRED: Must be able to obtain a Secret clearance however candidates who currently hold and are able to maintain an active Secret clearance are highly encouraged to apply. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
