GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Nursing Director, Surgical Services or staff nurse assists in the nursing care and preparation of surgical patients of all ages. Functions as a member of the sterile team. 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

1.    Assists with basic nursing care and preparation of surgical patients of all ages under the direct supervision of the staff nurse assigned. Assists in identifying patient needs based on age specific data. 
2.    Selects appropriate instruments and supplies and sets up tables as required for specific operations.
3.    Prepares and maintains the sterile field for all surgical procedures. 
4.    Prepares and passes instruments, sponges and supplies needed in the operative procedure and maintains a correct count. 
5.    Assists in the safe and proper care of surgical specimens and clean operating environment. 
6.    Prints preference cards from Meditech.
7.    Works closely with SPD, Surgical Procurement Coordinator and Supervisor, Surgical Services/SPD, in obtaining and maintaining necessary instruments and equipment. 
8.    Participates in on-call schedule as assigned. 
9.    Assists with orientation of students and new employees as assigned. 
10.    Communicates with all members of the health care team under the direction of the staff nurse.
11.    Complete performance improvement activities (i.e., Attest logs, refrigerator, and warmer temperatures.
12.    Performs other duties as assigned.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

1.    Provides team support services and demonstrates technical functions in a cost-effective, skillful manner that results in team, physician and patient satisfaction. 
2.    Completes and maintains all yearly competency monitors and mandatory training within defined time frame (i.e., safety, annual in-services, corporate compliance, confidentiality, HIPAA). 
3.    Consistently attends unit meetings. 
4.    Demonstrates an ability to remain calm and productive in a fast-paced, stressful environment. 
5.    Compliant with patient confidentiality standards. 
6.    Successful completion of Nursing Services and in-service requirements. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.    High school diploma or equivalent. 
1.    Surgical Technician certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology or equivalent experience and education. If applicable, must maintain current CST certification.
2.    Ability to successfully complete Basic Life Support Certification. 
3.    Consistently works as a team a member and communicates effectively. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.    Previous operating room work experience. 
2.    Bilingual.
