Powell People Solving Tough Problems

Based out of the Electrical Division Edmonton (EDE) location, the Second Year Apprentice Welder will report to the Manufacturing Supervisor of the Fabrication department. The Apprentice Welder will use a variety of welding processes and tools to produce precision parts and to construct Powell Canada products.

 

Essential Responsibilities

Fit-up Weldment per required mechanical engineered drawing and Product Specifications. Work with small hand tools, clamps and grinders to fit-up and weld structural steel or sheet metal products. Produce a variety of products, to meet the dimensional specifications of the mechanical engineered drawing. From the drawing, determine where each weld is to be performed and to meet the size and length requirements of each weld specified within the given tolerance allowed. Measuring and marking sheet metal according to drawings or templates. Meet any cosmetic or appearance specifications. This may require grinding welds and sheet metal buffing. Operate metalworking machines to cut punch, drill, and shape or straighten sheet metal. Grind and buff seams, joints and rough surfaces. Performing light maintenance on your welding and cutting equipment’s as well as small power tools, and fume extractors. Maintain the cleanliness of your work area and meet all requirements of the Powell Quality System for this position. Perform light maintenance on welding equipment such as replacing contact tips and nozzles, replacing liners and entire weld gun assemblies, replacing drive rolls on wire feeders and safely exchanging shielding gas bottles. Operate plasma cutters and cut materials using power tools or by hand. Participate in Powell's ongoing Safety Training. Promote a safety culture as well as attend all safety meetings. Ensures quality by following standard work instructions and identifying any potential risks to product quality. Ensure work areas remain clean and well organized. Other duties as required.

 

Core Competencies

Comprehension and understanding of show drawings. Ability to read or learn to understand various welding symbols. Ability to read a tape measure (including conversions from fraction to decimal and conversely from decimal to fraction and metric to imperial). Conscientious, thorough, accurate, and reliable when performing and completing job tasks. Ability to learn and adhere to all manufacturing policies and practices to ensure adherence to ISO requirements. Able to work effectively within your team and around other departments and their activities. Must have basic command of the English language both written and verbal.

 

Qualifications

Minimum education level of a High School diploma is required.  Completion of 2nd year in a Welding program. Registered Apprentice with AIT (or other provincial programs). CWB Certification is considered an asset, preferably FCAW S-classification all position.  Structural steel fabrication experience is considered an asset. Familiarity with MES (Manufacturing and Execution System). Safety certifications are an asset for the position. CSTS 2020 will be required before start date.  Due to the safety sensitive nature of this position successful candidates will undergo pre-employment substance abuse and medical testing upon hire.

 

Working Conditions

Safety sensitive position in a temperature controlled manufacturing or industrial environment with occasional outside activities. Required to wear personnel protective equipment at all times (i.e., hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety harnesses and respirators) when required. Must be able to work from all types of ladders (step ladders, "A" frame ladders, and all-size extension ladders). Working around loud machinery.

 

Physical Requirements

Able to maintain body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending or descending stairs. Bending the body at the waist, the legs at the knees, and extending arms and hands in any direction in a repetitive manner continuously. Continuous standing, walking 50-300 foot distances for long periods of time with only occasional sitting. Ability to lift up to 10-20lbs. frequently throughout the shift and occasionally 50lbs. Able to frequently look over shoulders, work with both arms above shoulders and use both arms at full length frequently. Using upper extremities to apply or exert a force continuously up to 20 lbs. throughout the shift and occasionally 100lbs. Typing, punching or applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm. Perceiving size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with the fingertips.
