Description Do you have a passion for leading and developing fellow researchers? Do you have an interest in Ocean Worlds of the outer solar system and the potential for life beyond Earth? If so, we're looking for someone like you to lead our team as supervisor of the astrobiology section! The Small Bodies and Ocean Worlds group conducts a cross-disciplinary program of research that includes flight missions, laboratory work, field work, and modeling. A throughgoing theme of much of this research is bodies that contain water in solid, liquid, or chemically bound forms, and the present or past water environments that have a potential to host life. Our group contains science leaders on the Dragonfly mission to Titan, has instruments on Europa Clipper, Lucy, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and the recently completed DART mission to demonstrate kinetic deflection of an asteroid. We operate APL’s Astrobiology Lab, Meteorite Lab, Impact Lab, Planetary Nuclear Spectroscopy Lab, and Planetary Radar Investigation, Demonstration, and Exploration Lab. The Astrobiology Section focuses on researching potentially habitable environments beyond Earth, laboratory studies of Earth analogs to habitable extraterrestrial environments, development of instrumentation for detection of extraterrestrial biosignatures, and missions including Europa Clipper and Dragonfly that investigate environments of astrobiological interest. As a section supervisor you will... Coach and mentor the 4-7 staff members in your section Lead the development of the vision and charter for the section and contribute to group level strategy discussions Develop new and unique relationships and research collaborations with other research groups within the group, branch, sector, lab, and beyond Guide the professional development of early career staff, including peer review of proposals and publications Identify hiring needs and participate in the hiring process Communicate often and effectively with staff and group leadership, including providing material for presentations, recommendations for awards, nominations for committees, information of tasking, and plans for future work Assist in activities to acquire new work for the group, including IRADs, new business or other proposals, and supporting technical and planning meetings with potential sponsors Help section members navigate APL internal processes (Bid &Proposal requests, public release, etc.) Qualifications You will meet the qualifications if you... The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
