Perform a variety of security and safety-related functions to safeguard students, employees, visitors, patients, and property. Create and maintain a non-escalating environment for all patients, visitors, and staff.
Work Performed
Serve as a professional representative of Duke Health, striving to create a positive first impression by: Showing respect through proper verbal etiquette (in person, via telephone, and other forms of communication). Demonstrating a sense of urgency when assisting customers and solving problems. Communicating concern through facial expressions, tone of voice, word choice, and body language. Communicate effectively and respectfully via two-way radio, computer, email, telephone, and in-person interactions within the department and with other departments, agencies, hospital staff, visitors, and patients. Maintain a professional appearance, consistent with policy. Patrol and monitor premises, on foot and using motorized conveyance, to prevent incidents and detect signs of criminal or suspicious activity. Respond promptly to and properly document calls for service in accordance with policies and procedures, including: Alarms Directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic Assisting patients Providing emergency medical assistance Offering motorist assistance Addressing parking violations Conducting protective escorts Investigating suspicious circumstances Unlocking/locking doors Deescalate difficult situations by remaining calm, being empathetic, and maintaining impulse control. Respond to patient intervention calls and interact with patients in the safest, most therapeutic manner. If necessary, physically restrain volatile or combative patients in accordance with department protocols. Maintain a weapons-free environment by: Controlling patient and visitor entry into the hospital. Confirming appropriate access to hospital areas by seeking proper authorization or identification. Operating detection and electronic monitoring devices to prevent weapons or contraband from entering the facility. Conducting searches of patient and visitor property for contraband. Visualizing and scanning all individuals during daily rounds for possible weapons and taking appropriate action as per policy. Maintain required certifications, including CPI, Vistelar, and CPR. Some assignments may require PPSB (Private Protective Security Board) certification. Understand and apply CMS guidelines for patient restraint and, for some assignments, using a TASER. Understand and apply North Carolina laws regarding self-defense and TASER use. Ensure compliance with University policies, such as smoking rules, and take appropriate enforcement action. Perform basic vehicle maintenance, such as checking fluids, and report mechanical issues to supervisors. Observe and report hazardous or unusual conditions. Demonstrate knowledge of the physical layout of all appropriate facilities and grounds.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Must have a High School Diploma or GED. Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver's License. Pass or achieve an acceptable score on all pre-employment screening. Pass an extensive background investigation. Continued employment is contingent upon successful attainment and ability to perform duties associated with job-related certifications (CPR, IHASS, first aid, etc.) within the timeframe established by the department.Experience
One year of experience, preferably in a security-related field.
