Security Officer
Summary The Security Officer (SO) is an armed officer, who has successfully completed the required NASA training, with NASA Federal arrest authority and the Federal Magistrate Program,(if required), whose primary duties may include but are not limited to: first response to emergencies; enforcing federal law and assimilated state law; conducting mobile patrols, inspections and searches; conducting traffic enforcement and traffic investigations; initiating an arrest and transporting persons; perform protective service work such as guarding NASA owned or leased buildings and property; protecting NASA equipment and material; controlling access to NASA installations by employees, visitors, and residents; and other duties as assigned. The SO is armed with a side arm, shotgun, or other weapons as required. Responsibilities Required to follow all company personnel and safety policies and perform all assigned duties in a safe work manner. Will arrive at work in proper uniform and carrying needed, issued equipment. Will be required to exercise force up to and including deadly force. Will participate in Guard Mount, receive assigned post, and copy any extra instructions. Will carry out general and special orders for post assigned. Will communicate via radio, telephone and orally according to orders. Required to interact and escort as required with public and government personnel. Will provide access control, traffic control and conduct walking and motorized armed security functions. Will be responsible for cleanliness of uniform and equipment assigned. Will follow applicable standard operating procedures and NASA regulations pertaining to security of weapons, buildings, personnel, NASA property and equipment. Will conduct personnel, vehicular, building, & facility checks and package & parcel inspections. Must be able to work flexible hours to include weekends and holidays if needed. As a critical position will be required to report and remain available for emergency duty in expectation of a declared emergency. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum High School Diploma or GED. Must be at least 21 years of age. Preferred minimum of 2 years of military law enforcement or 1-year armed security officer or NASA SPO. Honorably discharged (If Applicable). NASA Basic Training Standard (NBTS) required prior to appointment. Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS-100) training required prior to appointment. ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents (ICS-200) training required prior to appointment. Intermediate ICS for Expanding Incidents (CS-300) training required within 180 days of appointment. National Incident Management System (NIMS) (IS-700) training required prior to appointment. First Aid/CPR Certified or BLS certified per contract and PWS requirements. California Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems (CLETS). Must be able to possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license. Must be able to obtain a DoD security clearance, but not required to start. Must be able to meet drug testing and alcohol – free workforce requirements to include random drug and/or alcohol testing. Must speak, read, write concisely, and understand the English language, apply written rules, detailed orders, instructions, and training material. Have no record or history of illegal drug use, sale, possession, or manufacture. Have no felony convictions and no convictions that reflect on the individual’s reliability including those crimes classified under the Lautenberg Act. Must be able to maintain and qualify periodically on a course of fire with handgun, or other special weapons. Must be able to meet and maintain NASA Physical Certifications and complete a Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory -2 (MMPI-2) and Shipley Institute of Living Scale psychological examinations. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire. Must successfully complete the Initial Physical Agility Test (IPAT) which consist of the following: One mile run within the time limits described Age Time Limit to Pass 29 and under 10:00 minutes 30-39 11:00 minutes 40-49 11:30 minutes 50 and above 12:30 minutes Also complete the following obstacle course within 5 minutes (1) From a seated position, exit the vehicle. (2) Complete 220-yard run. (3) Navigate an obstacle course (total length 115 feet). Climb or vault over a solid structure, 40-inches in height. Three high step hurdles (24 inches, 12 inches, and 18 inches high, spaced 3 feet apart). Serpentine pylon maneuver, (4 pylons spaced 3 feet apart). Low crawl under two separate bars, 28 inches in height and spaced 36 inches apart. (4) Complete 50-foot sprint. (5) Drag 150 lb. dummy or mannequin 50 feet. (6) Complete 50-foot sprint to the obstacle course.
