Security Officer/Dispatcher
Title: Security Officer/Dispatcher Department: Public Safety and Security Reports To: Chief of Police Position Type: Staff Position Summary: Under the direction of the Shift Sergeant or designated supervisor, the Security Officer/Dispatcher is primarily responsible for the timely coordination of calls for service received at the Communications Center of the Public Safety Department. In addition they are responsible for answering emergency phone lines, radio requests from Police and Security Officers, and coordinating all telephonic communications with EMS, Fire, Physical Plant, Parking Services Dispatchers may be required to learn and have the ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Essential Functions: Safety and Security Coordination: The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the safety and security to persons and property in and about NJIT premises, which includes, by way of illustration only: - Coordinates all incoming calls for service received from University personnel and the public at the Central Communications Center. - Renders assistance and guidance to personnel reporting to the Central Communication Center in person. - Dispatches Security and Police Officers on assignment in accordance with department standard procedures and policy. - Assign Officers/Drivers into Verizon Fleet Management Tracking System. Monitor Officers’ activity so as to dispatch personnel accordingly. - Maintain and Operates the Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD). - Contacts other law enforcement agencies for assistance and resources as requested and in accordance with department standard procedures and policy. - Provide on-scene officers with information obtained from NCIC, CJIS, and AOCTELE. - Provides department members information from the computerized Vehicle Registration System (VRS) and makes other information identification checks with other agencies upon request. - Makes emergency notifications to University personnel upon direction. - Maintains the security of equipment, keys, and reports on his/her duty shift. - Monitors CCTV and alarm systems during duty shift. Additional Functions: In addition to their primary functions, Dispatchers, at the discretion of the Shift Supervisor, will also fulfill the following Security Officer functions, including, but not limited to: - Maintaining control of university keys for access to all university owned and leased buildings and offices, including but not limited to, securing and opening buildings in accordance with morning and evening routine duties. - Patrolling throughout the University to detect safety hazards and criminal activity, including but not limited to patrolling assigned area; preventing unauthorized persons from entering grounds and buildings, conducting periodic building checks to ensure only authorized persons are utilizing them, reporting safety and health hazards. In furtherance of the responsibility, the incumbent submits written reports when appropriate and required. - Assisting the University Police Force in emergency situations, special events and functions, including but not limited to assisting in crowd control and orderly evacuation as required during an emergency, providing assistance when accidents or illness occurs, notifying the radio dispatcher for necessary police assistance when appropriate, providing security duty at special events and ceremonies and handling special parking security for special occasions and events. - Providing service and assistance upon request to visitors, staff, students and co-workers as necessary, including but not limited to, rendering assistance to Police Officers with money escorts to the bank, escorting university personnel and delivering confidential mail and packages when required. Prerequisite Qualifications: - High school diploma or equivalent required. - Must have the ability to deal tactfully with all members of the University and local community. - Some radio communication knowledge required. - Minimum of 2 years security experience and prior security officer training required. Some knowledge of computer and CCTV systems required. Some experience in record keeping. - A good speaking voice and experience in dispatching required. Any criminal record will disqualify a candidate from eligibility for appointment absent exceptional mitigating circumstances as determined by the employer. - At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position. Additional Training/Certificates: (Upon Appointment) 1. Basic Tele-communicator Course 2. Training on in-house Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) 3. NJCJIS Operator Training- Training by TAC officer to dispatch candidate on use of CJIS manual and guides. 4. American Heart Association Provider B, or American Red Cross Community CPR-Basic Life Support- 8 hours. Bargaining Unit: OPEIU Range/Band: 17 FLSA: Non-Exempt Full-Time
