At CBC/Radio-Canada, People & Culture supports and advises senior leaders on managing the departments specialized in informing, entertaining and connecting Canadians to their public broadcaster.
Currently, we are seeking a Senior Advisor, Industrial Relations who can bring in-depth knowledge of collective bargaining, grievance resolutions, arbitration, mediation and negotiations and who can provide strategic advice to our clients, including those in News. The position is based in Toronto.
This role is a hybrid work arrangement. Work schedule to be discussed with the hiring Manager according to the guidelines defined by the department.
Your role
As a trusted member of the Human Resources/Industrial Relations team, you are responsible for interpreting, administering and providing support in negotiating CBC/Radio-Canada’s collective agreements, and for contributing to the development and implementation of Industrial Relations strategies for the Corporation.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Human Resources/Industrial Relations, you build relationships with and provide expert advice and guidance to senior business leaders and the People & Culture team regarding complex workplace issues, applicable legislation, grievance arbitration and the interpretation, application, administration and negotiation of collective agreements.
Using superior communication, research and analytical skills, you will manage industrial relations issues and the relationship with our unions.
Furthermore, you will be an integral part of key projects such as collective bargaining, grievance and arbitration management, joint (management and union) local and national committees and matters referred to the Canadian Industrial Relations Board.
How you will make an impact?
Provide industrial relations guidance and advice to management and human resources professionals.
Promote and maintain constructive and positive relationships with the unions.
Represent management in administration of collective agreements, including interpretation, grievances, and as a support in arbitration.
Ensure that CBC/Radio-Canada grievance activities are monitored, participate in the assessment of cases considered for reference to arbitration, and participate in the development of CBC/Radio-Canada positions in such cases.
Develop, recommend and implement guidelines for collective agreement interpretation and administration to ensure consistency across the Corporation in accordance with Industrial Relations strategy.
Participate in collective bargaining on behalf of the Corporation.
Monitor the Industrial Relations environment (e.g. legislation; judicial, regulatory and administrative board decisions), and analyze collective agreements in order to keep abreast of current issues and practices.
Qualifications
What you can bring to our team?
Strongly preferred:
Combination of education and experience equivalent to 5-7 years of in-depth knowledge and experience in the Industrial Relations field accompanied by a post-secondary degree in Business, Law, Human Resources or Industrial/Labour Relations.
Great-to-have:
Demonstrated ability to assess and analyze operational, business and human resources management issues and objectives, as well as labour/union strategies.
Knowledge of current and emerging trends in Industrial Relations.
Ability to build strong and positive relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and ability to develop quickly effective working relationships.
Strong analytical skills.
Ability to negotiate resolutions, potentially in confrontational environments, as well as handling more subtle, informal interactions.
Creativity to solve problems, resolve disputes and structure agreements to the satisfaction of both management and unions.
Ability to effectively handle a demanding workload.
Attention to details.
Able and willing to travel within Canada on occasion.
Bilingualism (English and French) would be an asset.
Strong computer skills (Google suite) and openness and ability to learn new ones (AI).
