Job Description:
Position Overview
This role is critical in ensuring compliance with customs regulations, managing tariff coding and classification, and overseeing import requirements and permits. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in customs compliance, Canadian Animal Health regulations, regulatory change management, and risk resolution. This role will work closely with the inbound transportation and merchandising teams. This includes regular meetings, updates, and feedback sessions to ensure all team members are informed and aligned with customs projects and compliance requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Customs Subject Matter Expert
Act as an internal consultant to merchandising teams to evaluate and recommend sourcing decisions to optimize customs impactLead initiatives focused on reducing duty ratesTariff Coding, Classification, and Compliance
Ensure consistent tariff coding and compliance with customs regulations.Manage tariff code changes and instruct on necessary data updates.Ensure accurate classification and valuation of imported merchandise.Import Requirements and Permit Management
Manage data components related to import requirements, including CFIA permits.Investigate and provide direction on regulated items.Manage import permits and guide exporters to ensure compliance.Regulatory Change Management and Customs Audits
Monitor and manage regulatory changes associated with restricted goods.Participate in Canada Customs audits and ensure compliance.Address changes in trade agreements and duty rates.Compliance Risk Resolution and Discrepancy Management
Resolve compliance risks related to samples, tradeshows, and undeclared goods.Investigate load factor discrepancies and initiate necessary Customs amendments.Vendor Liaison, Duty-Free Imports, and General Compliance
Liaise with vendors and legal teams on provider agreements.Ensure Pet Valu benefits from duty-free import opportunities under agreements like CUSMA.Maintain overall customs compliance, including accurate filing and record-keeping.Skills, Experience, Education, Certifications
Certifications: Hold either a Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or Certified Trade Compliance Specialist (CTCS) certification.Experience: At least 5 years of experience in a customs environment, with direct experience in Canadian customs procedures.Language Skills: Proficient in both English verbal and written communication. French language skill is an asset.Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Excel.Decision-Making: Ability to work effectively with ambiguous information and to draw on experience to make decisions.#CORPHIRE
