The Senior Associate Director serves as a leader on the Strategic Content team within the Division of Philanthropy. This role is responsible for developing and managing strategic content strategies, overseeing an individual portfolio of scientific/technical annual reports, drafting proposals and other collateral as needed for a VIP donor base, and helping the entire Division reach its financial goals. This position reports to the Director, Strategic Content, Donor Experience & Engagement.

The onboarding of this role will include a comprehensive training process which includes completion of online modules, shadowing colleagues, as well as hands-on learning experiences throughout the first calendar year in the role.

This position is considered remote, 0-1 days onsite at 10 Brookline Place, Brookline, MA each week. DFCI guidelines state that employees must reside in New England: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont.

Responsibilities Lead strategic content efforts to solicit and steward major, principal, and transformational donors, The Dana-Farber Campaign (Fiscal Year 18 – 25) and future campaigns, naming opportunities, major donor events and programs, gift recognition, and other projects as assigned. Provide senior-level donor strategy and planning for existing programs and for new business opportunities that arise. Manage the stewardship reporting schedule, workflow, and editorial process. Research, write, and edit unique stewardship reports for distribution to top-tier donors of gifts and pledges:Annual reporting schedule and workflow for Donor Relations Science Writer/Proposal Writers to ensure timely delivery of reports to donors; Editorial process for all narrative reports; Collaboration with staff across the Institute and Division including Philanthropy Communications, Fiscal & Regulatory Management, departmental business managers, Institute faculty, and others; Coordination of internal and external resources for Science Writer/Proposal Writers to improve narrative reports and strengthen information sharing;Provide senior-level research, writing, and editing on the following types of projects for major, principal, transformational and planned giving donors:Proposals and pre-proposalsSummaries of scientific research for lay donor and staff audiences;Articles for donor newsletters and publications, including Impact and other print and online/email newsletters (adhering to AP style)Donor stewardship event materials including coordination of print and electronic invitations, program books, fact sheets, action cards, slide presentations, gift items, etc.Donor recognition initiativesServe as senior writer and project lead on top-level and Division-wide projects, leading cross-functional teams and providing senior-level expertise on content strategy, messaging, and execution.Collaborate with appropriate team members to create guidelines, manuals, and templates, and enforce their usage to ensure efficient and consistent processes.

 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has direct supervisory responsibility for four to five Science Writers/Proposal Writers.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required; master’s degree in a scientific field preferred. Six to eight years’ experience writing or editing in a scientific context strongly preferred.  

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Experience supervising and managing staff, developing and producing publications, and managing complex projects; strong command of AP style guidelines; experience researching and writing strategic plans and analyzing results; and experience writing scientific materials, with the strong ability to translate scientific or technical information into layman’s terms. Must have refined organizational skills, multi-tasking ability, and a can-do, client-service attitude.
