Requirements
The Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) was established in 2009 at the request of state leaders who recognized the need to strengthen connections between climate policies and policymakers at all levels of government and to help policymakers develop aligned strategies that work together to address climate change. We aim to help good ideas make their way into laws and regulations, so we focus on helping federal, state, and local leaders with the messy and complicated business of practical, real world policymaking. GCC serves as a resource to state, federal, and local policymakers who are working to develop policies to reduce greenhouse gas pollution and become more resilient to the effects of climate change, providing legal, policy, and process support to inform policy development.
As a member of the Georgetown Climate Center’s Mitigation Program, the Mitigation Senior Associate will work to advance nation-wide progress on clean energy and climate mitigation. The Senior Associate should come with a foundation of expertise in a specific area of climate mitigation, a passion to deepen that expertise, and a willingness to expand into new areas based on opportunities for progress. The Senior Associate will address a range of climate mitigation topics, including but not limited to commercial and industrial decarbonization and climate planning. The Senior Associate will interact regularly with senior policymakers at the federal, state, tribal, and local levels. Reporting to the Mitigation Program Director, the Senior Associate’s responsibilities will include the following:
Work with government policymakers, Center staff and faculty advisors, external partners, and consultants to identify and advance opportunities for rapid, cost-effective, and equitable decarbonization.
Lead projects involving policy and legal research, analysis, and writing on a range of climate mitigation topics, such as industrial market transformation (e.g., clean concrete and cement, fleet electrification), state-level climate planning, and climate finance (e.g., green banks, commercial financing).
Build relationships of trust with policymakers, partners, and stakeholders, representing the Center at conferences, events, and with the media as appropriate.
Conduct briefings for and facilitate discussions among senior government officials, funders, NGO and academic partners, and private sector partners.
Provide mentorship and/or oversight for more junior staff, university research assistants and practicum students, outside contractors, and external partners, as needed.
Serve as a thought leader and subject matter expert, maintaining fluency with recent news and policy developments, and identify and respond to opportunities for funding and outreach as needed.
