As part of the Georgetown Climate Center’s Mitigation Program, the Mitigation Senior Associate will work to advance nation-wide progress on clean energy and climate mitigation. The Senior Associate will cover the clean energy transition broadly in order to limit the impacts of climate change, but is expected to have a special focus on clean electricity at the federal, state, tribal, and local levels. Reporting to the Mitigation Program Director, the Senior Associate’s responsibilities will include the following:
Work with government policymakers, Center staff and faculty advisors, external partners, and consultants to identify and advance opportunities for rapid, cost-effective, and equitable decarbonization, with an emphasis on the interplay between federal and state-level action.
Lead projects involving policy and legal research, analysis, and writing on a range of clean energy and climate mitigation topics, such as grid planning for electrification and other new demand, advancement of renewable energy and demand management solutions, and emissions reduction policies (market-based, regulatory, and/or funding and financing).
Build relationships of trust with policymakers, partners, and stakeholders, representing the Center at conferences, events, and with the media as appropriate.
Conduct briefings for and facilitate discussions among senior government officials, funders, NGO and academic partners, and private sector partners.
Provide mentorship and/or oversight for more junior staff, university research assistants and practicum students, outside contractors, and external partners, as needed.
Serve as a thought leader and subject matter expert, maintaining fluency with recent news and policy developments, and identify and respond to opportunities for funding and outreach as needed.
Work Interactions
The Senior Associate will report to the Mitigation Program Director and will be an integral part of the climate mitigation team. They will interact with senior state, tribal, local, and federal officials; Georgetown faculty, staff, and administration; external partners; funders; and members of the media. In addition, the Senior Associate will interact with and supervise the work of research assistants, students, and consultants. Excellent research and communications skills (written and oral) are essential, as is good judgment.
Requirements and Qualifications
Master’s Degree or a J.D. (or equivalent work experience)
A minimum of three years of experience in energy law and policy or a related field
Excellent research and communication skills (writing and speaking)
Experience working with or for state, tribal, local, or federal governments as well as managing complex projects with multiple partners
Experience with engagement with or for communities concerned about energy and climate issues

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$54,616.00 - $100,493.33Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
