The Bridges and Civil and Offshore Structures (BCOS) team undertakes exciting and challenging  engineering mandates for major bridge projects throughout Canada, including those of the Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MTMD) for the replacement of the 2km Ile d'Orléans Bridge with a 430m cable stay span near Quebec City, the Independent Certifier and Design Checker role for the replacement of the Ile aux Tourtes Bridge in Montreal, the lead design role for the Trois-Pistoles River bridge in Quebec, the Technical Advisor role to Metrolinx for the planning, design, procurement, and construction phases of Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE), and the Technical Advisor to Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) for the replacement of the iconic Alexandra Bridge in Ottawa.


The Senior Bridge Engineer will be based in our Ottawa office and join a small core team at the heart of the Alexandra Bridge project, which aims to deliver a signature multi-modal bridge in the center of Canada’s capital, located in front of the Parliament Buildings, and between the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of History. The project has a complex approvals and stakeholder engagement process involving multiple parties and requires a bridge design coordinator to support the Lead Bridge Engineer in the overall coordination of the bridge engineering and architectural teams, manage requirements related to bridge design, and coordinate the interface between the bridge design teams and the client and project key stakeholders. The Senior Bridge Engineer will also support the development of the BCOS team in Ottawa and business development activities in the Capital National Region (NCR).

•    As bridge design coordinator on the Alexandra Bridge Replacement project, support the Lead Bridge Engineer in the overall coordination of the bridge engineering and architectural teams, manage requirements related to bridge design and coordinate the interface between the bridge design teams and the client and project key stakeholders;
•    Lead the technical delivery of bridge & civil structures designs and construction specifications for new build and retrofit projects;
•    Manage successful commercial delivery of projects or portions of projects;
•    Contribute to the growth of the BCOS team in Ottawa and more generally to the technical and personal development of BCOS team members across Canada;
•    Promote collaboration with other disciplines and market groups within Arup locally, regionally and globally;
•    Support business development activities through preparation of proposals, and establishing and maintaining relationships with current and potential key clients and partners in the NCR;
•    Encourage a culture and manage processes that delivers high quality, technically efficient and cost-effective project solutions.

Is this role right for you?

•    Bachelor’s / Master’s degree in Civil Engineering;
•    Professional license in Ontario and/or Quebec;
•    10+ years’ industry recognized experience in design and management of projects with emphasis on bridges and infrastructure projects in the highways and rail sectors;
•    Strong technical, leadership, communication and management skills;
•    Experience in leading analysis and design of new bridges and rehabilitation/retrofit of existing bridges;
•    Experience in long span bridges as well as bridge inspection, condition assessment would be assets;
•    Proficient in local codes & standards, and provincial standard details and construction specifications;
•    Experience with complex multistakeholder public projects;
•    Experience with Federal projects and design approvals in the NCR; 
•    Experience with alternative delivery procurement; PDB / IPD experience would be an asset;
•    Established client network in the NCR with public and private sector clients;
•    MTO RAQS qualification in Bridge Engineering for Design & Evaluation and for Rehabilitation would be assets; and
•    Bilingual English and French would be an asset.

Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Ottawa is $110,000 to $120,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Ottawa will differ.
