We are currently hiring a Senior Building Systems Modeling Engineer, M&S who will be a member of our Model & Simulation Network of Excellence (NoE). In this role you will be responsible for the strategic development of HVAC System Modeling and Simulation capabilities and tools for HVAC & R products in electrification.

Where is the work:

Due to the nature of this role, this position has been designated as a Hybrid work schedule with work performed onsite 3 days each week.

 

What you will do:

Develop and deploy models at the system level, including HVAC equipment, building energy models (BEMs), Distributed Energy Resources (DERs like Thermal Energy Storage, PV, Wind etc), and their interaction within the Grid Connected environment. Develop a comprehensive understanding of HVAC equipment operation in chilled and hot water heating systems designed for buildings, data centers, and various processed cooling and heating applications. Apply this expertise to develop detailed models that accurately reflect system design, analysis, control, and operations. Demonstrate detailed technical understanding of Buildings and Grid Controls, Demand Management, Energy conservation measures (ECMs) principles, and justify the impact on energy savings and CO2e reductions, through the use of models. Develop and implement state-of-the-art physics/data-based system models to enable performance predictions, and transient analyses, supporting key strategic areas like electrification and decarbonization and data centers. Participate in long term technology roadmap development discussions and help build new external partnerships for Trane Technologies. Actively look for external funding opportunities in the domain area and provide technical inputs in development of project proposals. Work with internal and external partners in technical execution of long term externally funded R& D projects. Works closely with global team members, cross-functional associates and internal customers in dynamic environment, to understand the implications of modeling results and drive system level optimization and answer critical design questions through modeling results. Lead the evaluation of new and innovative technologies as they appear for potential commercial value, either as disruptive competition or prospective new products or services for the company. Develop and communicate clear understanding of customer requirements and meet or exceed those expectations. Conceptualize & develop project ideas leading to new advanced capability development in related domain areas to keep TT to the leading edge of technology. Network across the organization and externally to identify and communicate opportunities to apply system modeling and simulation to product design, applications and processes. Leads internal strategic projects and reports project progress for quality, deliverables and cost. Overnight Travel - approximately 10%.

 

What you will bring:

Bachelor's degree in engineering with at least 7 years' experience with applied data driven modeling in building simulation, OR - Master's Degree in Engineering or Building science or Controls and at least 5 years of modeling and/or applied data science experience is required, OR -  PhD with an emphasis in Thermodynamic/HVAC/building sciences/control/Applied data science and at least 3 years' experience is a plus. Must have experience in HVAC systems modeling, Building energy management systems, or HVAC equipment and controls. Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink or Modelica based system modeling for at least 6 months is required. Experience in advanced control techniques like Reinforcement Learning (RL) or Model Predictive Control (MPC) is desirable. Familiarity with data science, predictive modeling, and surrogate modeling techniques is necessary. Knowledge or experience in applying HVAC system modeling and controls to data center application is desirable. Understanding of generative AI (LLM Agents) for RAG based applications, machine learning, and predictive maintenance is desirable. Experience with building modeling software such as Energy Plus/TRACE 3D+ is preferred. Practical experience in closed-loop control for a minimum of 6 months is preferred, along with knowledge of multi-variable control. Emphasis on computer programming or related experience is beneficial, particularly in C#/C++, Python, or Javascript. Experience and familiarity working in a research-oriented environment preferred. Must be an innovative self-starter capable of setting and meeting goals and deadlines, and of making critical business decisions. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are necessary. Demonstrates intellectual curiosity and industrial awareness, capable of applying advanced approaches, technologies, and innovations in modeling and simulation for organizational advancement.

 

Compensation: 

Base Salary: $94,000 - $125,000
