Marathon Petroleum Company LP (MPC) has an opening in our Decision Intelligence organization for a data visualization expert. The Decision Intelligence team’s mission is to deliver business insights and value through analytics and innovation. We do that by delivering a superior suite of analytical tools and services that deliver value to the entire enterprise. Our Business Intelligence Developers leverage knowledge and experience in business analysis, data mining, data analysis, and visualization to develop analytical solutions for critical business challenges. This position is responsible for using a combination of business acumen and analytical skills to identify, prioritize, and solve high-impact business problems providing descriptive and diagnostic insights into what happened and why it happened. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying, cleansing, combining, visualizing, and analyzing data from a variety of sources to obtain actionable business insights. In addition, they must effectively communicate the results to managers, project stakeholders, and engineering teams. This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency, and skill level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications. Key Responsibilities + Leads Business Intelligence projects from initiation to completion. + Collaborates with Data Engineers to optimize data pipelines and ETL processes. + Executes data extraction from diverse sources, including structured and unstructured data. + Collaborates cross-functionally to drive business decisions using Business Intelligence. Collaborates with Data Governance teams to ensure data compliance and security. + Mentors and guides less experienced professionals in Business Intelligence best practices. + Develops and maintains complex data models to extract meaningful business insights. + Recommends improvements to existing Business Intelligence infrastructure. + Interprets data findings and translates them into actionable business strategies. + Oversees the integration of Business Intelligence tools with other business systems. + Drives Business Intelligence strategies aligned with the company's business goals. Education and Experience + Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, related field or equivalent experience. + 5+ years of relevant experience required. + SQL: Proficient in writing table joins, aggregation, indexes, views, nested queries. + Power BI: Proficient in Power Query transforms, writing measures in DAX, defining star schema models, creating user-friendly business visualizations. Skills + Analytical Thinking - Strong problem-solving skills to identify architectural challenges, analyze requirements, evaluate options, and propose effective solutions. + Dashboard Reporting – The ability to access information from databases, forms, and other sources, and prepare reports according to requirements. + Data Analysis – The process of measuring and managing organizational data, identifying methodological best practices, and conducting statistical analyses. + Data Interpretations – Data interpretation involves analyzing and extracting meaningful insights from raw data, transforming it into a comprehensible and actionable format. It often requires the application of statistical methods, visualization techniques, and domain knowledge to derive informed conclusions and make data-driven decisions. + Data Mining – Data mining is sorting through data to identify patterns and establish relationships. Data mining parameters include: Association - looking for patterns where one event is connected to another event Sequence or path analysis - looking for patterns where one event leads to another later event Classification - looking for new patterns [May result in a change in the way the data is organized but that's ok] Clustering - finding and visually documenting groups of facts not previously known Forecasting - discovering patterns in data that can lead to reasonable predictions about the future Data mining techniques are used in mathematics, cybernetics, and genetics. Web mining, a type of data mining used in customer relationship management [CRM], takes advantage of the huge amount of information gathered by a Web site to look for patterns in user behavior. + Data Preparation – Data preparation, data wrangling, also known as data munging, refers to the process of cleaning, structuring, and transforming raw data into a suitable format for analysis or other purposes. It involves tasks such as handling missing values, standardizing formats, and merging datasets to ensure data quality and usability. + Data Privacy – Ability to understand and implement practices that ensure the protection and confidential handling of personal and sensitive information. This includes knowledge of relevant laws and regulations (such as GDPR or HIPAA), the ability to design and enforce policies that safeguard data, and the skills to manage data access rights and consent protocols. + Data Quality Management – Strong understanding of data quality dimensions, methodologies, and best practices to establish and maintain data quality standards and processes. + Data Visualization – Skill in designing and creating compelling visualizations and data stories that effectively communicate insights and facilitate decision-making. + Predictive Analytics – Augmented Analytics refers to the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to enhance data preparation, insight generation, and decision-making within analytics processes. It automates data analysis, identifies patterns, and provides natural language processing interfaces to empower non-technical users with actionable insights, making the analytics process more accessible and efficient. + Structured Query Language (SQL) – SQL (Structured Query Language) is a standardized programming language designed for managing and manipulating relational databases. It enables users to interact with databases by defining, querying, updating, and managing data stored in a relational database management system (RDBMS). SQL allows users to perform various operations such as retrieving data, inserting new records, updating existing records, and deleting records, as well as creating and modifying database structures like tables, indexes, views, and stored procedures. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, related field or equivalent experience. 5+ years of relevant architecture experience.
