Where is the work:
This position has been designated as a Hybrid work schedule with work performed onsite 3 days each week.
The Team:
Join an industry leading team as an experienced Senior Chemist supporting development of sustainable components and systems for Trane Technologies as part of the System Chemistry group in La Crosse, Wisconsin. In this position you will be part of Trane Technologies Corporate Materials & Chemistry Network of Excellence applying chemistry solutions to help our customers develop sustainable and energy efficient products for their building air conditioning and transport refrigeration needs.
The Role:
As a Trane Technologies Senior Chemist, you will apply deep subject matter knowledge to resolve complex chemistry and materials challenges, developing project objectives, identifying technical approach concepts, recommending and overseeing experimental work, ensuring experimental results are properly analyzed, appropriate conclusions are drawn, additional actions are suggested, and results and recommendations are effectively communicated in a timely manner. Successful candidates will also take a strong role in defining needs and opportunities for our business units, converting those needs into clearly defined project objectives, and subsequently developing and characterizing solutions to meet those needs.
Responsibilities:
· Provide subject matter expertise and guidance on specifications, design and development of non-metallic materials, lubricant chemistry, and interaction with refrigerants to support new product development, new technology, reliability & quality, and sourcing-related projects.
· Interface with Business Unit Engineers to understand, translate chemistry requests into actionable solutions and project plans and work with the rest of the chemistry team to both execute and oversee, guide the work of other chemists in the Lab.
· Develop, recommend, and oversee test protocols and schedules to validate material, component, assembly, and/or application.
· Provide engineering support and thought leadership for process development, root cause analysis, and quality resolution.
· Manage multiple projects simultaneously while also supporting short-term sustaining engineering needs from the business unit (failure analysis, supply disruption, quality issues, general consulting).
· Write technical reports, specifications, and oversee requirements management for engineering excellence activities within area of subject matter expertise.
· Grow expertise in new or emerging non-metallic material for sealing technologies and contribute to technology roadmaps.
· Build and maintain relevant internal and external technical networks through partnerships and participation with key technical experts.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and 10 years of experience in chemistry related role, or Advanced Chemistry (MS or PhD) degree and 5 years experience in chemistry related role.
· Demonstrated chemistry expertise and hands-on capabilities to be able to both perform chemistry work while overseeing and guiding the work of other chemists. Knowledge and experience in refrigerant and lubricant chemistries a plus.
· Quick learning ability to self-educate in HVAC space and related materials and chemistry technologies and needs.
· Proficient in problem solving with excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Strong interpersonal skills, capable of working independent of supervision
· English speaking/reading/writing skills required.
· Proven ability to drive innovative ideas/solutions into product designs.
· Experience writing technical reports, specifications, invention disclosures, patent applications, patents, and publications. Ability to present to internal and external stakeholders, and at external conferences.
· Capable of hands on interactions with lab instrumentation (i.e. GC-MS, ICP, HPLC, FTIR, TGA, DSC) and test methods verification.
· Experience developing innovative solutions to complex problems across material selection, design and manufacturing method development.
· Up to 15% travel may be required, including international travel.
Compensation:
Base Pay Range: $80,000 - $130,000
Total compensation for this role will include a commission/incentive plan. Disclaimer: This base pay range is based on US national averages. Actual base pay could be a result of seniority, merit, geographic location where the work is performed.
