Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Clinical Pathology is responsible for the laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance. Utilizing the latest advances in computer technology, the Division maintains millions of dollars of state-of-the-art automated equipment at its laboratory sites and services hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and voluntary physicians' offices at more than 40 sites. 
Pathology is seeking a Senior Clerk to be responsible for pre and post analytical processes of the laboratory, registration, order entry, specimen receiving, handling, and sorting, delivery to automation sample input/output, and distributing samples to workbenches and other departments/reference labs.   Troubleshoot specimen input/output modules of the track and resolve software and track exception errors.   Handle client and workflow related issues, critical value reporting, monitor specimen worklists and quality dashboards.  Process specialized specimens (CSF, bone marrows, anatomic pathology) for proper handling and recognize issues and problems and address them as appropriate as well as assist in the training of others.

 

Responsibilities:
•    Patient registration, insurance verification, and all other registration and specimen order entry related tasks including reference testing
•    Follow-up with clients/clinical staff for additional information, specimen questions, reporting and documentation of critical values
•    Specimen preparation and handling to include, but not limited to; specimen retrieval, centrifugation, aliquoting, add-ons, delivery and pick-up to appropriate areas, packaging/manifesting to reference laboratories
•    Process specimens according to lab sections and reference laboratories requirements, including special handling and processing of non-blood specimens (i.e., CSF, bone marrows, body fluids and anatomic pathology specimens) and specimens on automation line
•    Troubleshoot input/output modules of the track. Resolve software and track exception errors 
•    Communicate track issues with mechanics, supervisors, and technologists
•    Inventory management including monitoring of stock levels
•    Conform to all infection control procedures and keep a clean and well-organized work area 
•    Report and handle basic facility issues with appropriate departments: electrical, plumbing, safety, etc.
•    Responsible for training other staff
•    Perform other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:
•    High School Diploma/GED required; associate degree preferred
•    Must be knowledgeable of specimen processing instructions
•    Operation of laboratory centrifuges, computers, printers, pneumatic tubes, and office equipment required
•    Learn order test codes
•    Ability to use laboratory and clinical information, operate and maintain label printers.
•    Good communicational and organizational skills

 

This position is located at the Moses campus in the SurgePath Lab. The hours are 8:30am - 5:00pm with alternate weekends.
