Position Summary:
The Senior Advisor, Communications is a strategic communications position reporting to the Senior Director, Strategy and Operations. In this role, the incumbent analyzes, develops and implements communication plans for the Office of the Vice-President, Administration and Finance (OVPAF) which are aligned with the University mission and messaging. The position will also support and coordinate with OVPAF sub-units on individual communications efforts as needed and liaise with Communications and Institutional Relations to plan and respond to internal and external facing media requests, on behalf of the OVPAF.  The incumbent identifies communication needs, determines tactics, develops materials and assesses the effectiveness of communications efforts.   

Primary Responsibilities:

Draft extensive high-quality executive level communications including speeches, presentations, key messages, talking points, statements, briefing notes, correspondence, website text and more.   Develop and implement communication plans, strategies and processes to ensure that information, news, activities, major initiatives and projects are communicated clearly, accurately and effectively to internal and external stakeholders.  Develop and implement communication strategies to enhance alignment across sub-units and facilitate effective communication to ensure transparency and cohesionCollaborate with internal stakeholders to plan and implement proactive, responsive, and effective communication strategies that support the activities of the Office of the VP Administration and Finance and its sub-units.Provide senior professional expertise in communications to Administration and Finance sub-units. Collaborate and liaise with Communication and Institutional Relations to ensure that OVPAF communications are aligned with those of McGill University.  Liaise with Communication and Institutional Relations to ensure that they are provided with timely and accurate information during crises, or in response to media inquiries related to the OVPAF and its reporting units.Establish and oversee implementation of graphic and writing style standards to be followed for all material published by the unit and sub-units.  Provide recommendations for the revision and maintenance of the OVPAF website and ensure their timely and thorough implementation


Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
Excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills. Understanding of the University organizational structure and governance. Experience in developing and implementing strategic communication plans, including change management communications. Experience in managing communications priorities in a complex organizational structure, negotiating content to accommodate differing internal priorities. Ability to function under pressure and manage tight deadlines. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective relationships. Discretion, integrity and tact. Superior capacity to communicate and knowledge of French and English. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.
