Senior Computational Scientist

POSITION SUMMARY

Pfizer is currently focused on expanding its bioinformatics core. You will support computational biology teams by providing expert guidance and hands-on computational support across the R&D organization. You will work closely with counterparts in the IT, high performance computing, cloud computing, and machine learning teams to bridge the gap between scientific questions and the computing resources available to answer them.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

You will become a go-to technical expert and key support contact for computational biology/bioinformatics researchers working in internal and cloud based High Performance Computing (HPC) environments.

Interface between computational scientists and HPC engineers responsible for maintaining hardware and other core services to maximize the benefit of HPC and cloud capabilities.

Provide guidance to IT teams and promote HPC/Cloud adoption within the community.

Install, compile, troubleshoot, optimize, and document use of scientific software.

Build, update and troubleshooting R environments, Python environments, commercial, and in-house applications.

Supports data ingest and development of dataflows.

Supports Nextflow pipeline development, execution, and infrastructure troubleshooting.

Develop user documentation and training targeted at application scientists for scientific computing hardware and software.

Attend technical meetings and relevant scientific conferences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced degree in a relevant field or 2-4 years of experience in ML/AI, life sciences, data science, or HPC

Excellent Linux skills, including scripting, building/installing software, using package managers or managing scientific software in an HPC environment.

Experience with building, deploying, and managing R environments and applications

Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot issues related to machine configuration, environment settings, etc.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; good in a team environment.

Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple tasks, dynamically determining priority based on need, while keeping all customers apprised of the status of their request(s)

PREFERRED QUALIIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in data science, life science, computer science or other related field

Fluency in R

Advanced HPC and cloud computing (AWS) experience

The candidate will work in HPC and cloud environments with tools such as Nextflow, R, Python, Jupyter, AWS, Slurm, Docker, Singularity, Git, and Terraform.  Familiarity with some (but not all) of these tools is expected.


The annual base salary for this position ranges from $99,900.00 to $166,500.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 15.0% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
