**Custom Job Purpose:**
This position exists to perform responsible duties for the administration, supervision, directs, enforces, and performs the permitting and inspection of construction, alteration, repair, remodeling, or demolition of structures and the installation of building systems throughout the school district to ensure compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws, regulations and standards.
**Essential Functions of this Job**
Ensures public safety and compliance; complies with State statues as required by law; meets with contractors/owners about ongoing construction projects and customer service issues; meets with City/County staff about proposed construction projects. Confers with architects and engineers on plan reviews for compliance with the Florida Building Code. Interprets building codes and ordinances; provides oversight of contracts with cities which includes answering questions and responding to any emergency; creates processes to improve productivity; monitors changes to the building codes and provides updates to the employees. Monitors construction sites for compliance with the Florida Building Code; reports any issues to supervisors that might occur if immediate actions are not taken; responds to public or other County/City agencies' inquiries about building codes and ordinances.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:**
The building official shall have general knowledge of sound engineering practice in respect to the design and construction of structures, the basic principles of fire prevention, the accepted requirements for means of egress and the installation of elevators and other service equipment necessary for the health, safety and general welfare of the occupants and the public. Considerable knowledge of the State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF). Demonstrates a level of proficiency in writing, and oral communication to effectively communicate in a variety of situations. Proficient with computer hardware and software.
**Education, Experience and/or Certification/License Requirements**
Requires ten (10) years combined experience as an Electrical Contractor, General Contractor, Mechanical Contractor or Plumbing Contractor, Chief Inspector, Plans Examiner, Inspector employed by a municipality or private company contracted with a municipality, which includes five (5) years construction experience and two (2) years of supervisory experience.
(Bachelor or Associate of Science Degree in Engineering, Architecture or Building Construction from an accredited school may be credited for a maximum of three (3) years for a Bachelor's Degree or a maximum of one (1) year for an Associate's Degree.) Graduation from an accredited high school or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required. Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License for the duration of the appointment. Must be certified as a Building Code Administrator or eligible for certification by the BOAF of Rules and Appeals and the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation as a Building Code Administrator, pursuant to the requirements of the Florida Building Code, depending on area of assignment.
Possess and maintain a Certificate of Competency for the duration of the appointment.
**Work Context:**
Requires some sitting and standing, walking and moving about to coordinate work. Requires the use of alternative communication systems, such as electronic mail, telephones and computers.
Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines. Requires face-to-face discussions and contact with individuals and/or teams. Requires work with internal and external contacts, and with the public.
**Physical Environment:**
Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Requires walking for the majority of the day, and the ability to lift, carry, move and/or position objects infrequently weighing up to 20 pounds.
