This could be your chance to practice pioneering law for an innovative global tech company! eBay is seeking a highly skilled and collaborative attorney to join the legal team supporting our thriving and innovative payments and financial services platform. You will be responsible for providing legal and regulatory advice on new payments and financial services initiatives at eBay. Our rapidly expanding payments offerings include managed and seamless end-to-end payments on our marketplace platform, offering buyers more choice and flexibility when it comes to how and when they want to pay on eBay, gift cards, seller financing, and numerous other innovative and unique products and features. You will provide targeted and pragmatic counseling to ensure our platform remains aligned with global payments regulation and card network rules. This is a full-time position based in the Bay Area, with hybrid office work (currently 3 days a week).
Primary Responsibilities:
Collaborate and advise on the design, development, and roll out of new business models, products, and features throughout the entire product development lifecycle, with an eye towards global scalability
Advise on compliance with global payments, money transmission, AML/CTF, and consumer protection regulations, as well as card network rules
Develop processes and procedures, payments agreements, and user-facing terms for new business lines
Translate complex financial regulations and network rules into clear requirements for business, compliance, product and engineering teams
Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Anti-Money Laundering/Sanctions Compliance, Risk, Finance/Treasury, Accounting, Marketing, Privacy, Information Security, Internal Audit, and Government Relations
Anticipate regulatory changes and proactively advise leadership about how eBay should navigate through such changes
Manage numerous projects simultaneously under deadline pressure
Minimum Qualifications:
J.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) and membership in at least one US state bar
8+ years providing payments advice to regulated non-bank financial institutions, preferably in the fintech space, including in-house experience with payments matters in the context of internet or technology companies
Experience advising on US and global payments/money transmission regulation and card network rules
Experience providing strategic and pragmatic regulatory advice to business, engineering, and compliance teams
Experience providing product counseling advice for new payments products within a fintech or other non-bank financial institutions
Technical understanding of the payments and financial ecosystem, especially as relevant to payments as a service
Experience working cross-functionally and using critical thinking to achieve business objectives
Ability to manage and deliver across a number of top-priority projects
Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Flexible and agile problem solver, with the ability to tolerate ambiguity in a fast-paced environment where change is happening every day
Good sense of humor and team spirit
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong curiosity about alternative payments, emerging payments technology, and the fintech industry
In-house legal department experience
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment in California, Washington, or New York is expected in the range below.
$158,800 - $239,800Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
