The Department
Our Data Science team in our Analytics office in Karlsruhe provides forecast models, interactive analytical tools and predictive scenarios to market professionals. We apply a wide range of advanced analytics techniques from economics, statistical to machine learning & AI, optimisation and agent-based models on internally and externally sourced expert reviewed data. We predict future developments of prices, supply, demand and trade flows for the commodity markets we cover.
Job Purpose
Are you an experienced Software Engineer / Developer and looking to get closer to Data Science? Are you interested in leaving the short-term project stress and staying on an asset for a longer term? As Senior Software Engineer for Data Science at ICIS, you will join our experienced Data Science team of 25 and complement our technical capability to operationally deploy and maintain Data Science models and model interfaces. Your primary focus will be on our central analytical web platform and forecast application which our market experts use to execute, configure, review and share forecast models and data. This Data Science Python (Dash) application visualises relevant forecast data and cross-dependencies across more than 100 interconnected commodities across all major global regions. It is the central backbone of ICIS’ forecast process and provides collaborative workflow functionality to international users across 4 continents. In your role, you will technically look after and maintain the application. You will also work closely in an agile backlog-driven process with the product owner and our Data Scientists to implement and roll out further enhancements. For this, you will think about good testing strategies, code improvements, automated operational checks and troubleshooting. You will also coach Data Scientists on software engineering best practises.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
Maintain and enhance applications in Python (Dash) to put the “human in the loop” with Data Science modelsSupport Data Scientists on maintenance and improvements of the code base and code structure for operational models and backend data architecturesDevelop, test, and roll out new application functionality and change requests following product owner prioritizationManage operational models & applications (monitoring, refactoring, update of live services)Review and debug code and ensure good code documentationEnable efficient communication across teams through fast prototyping and demos of potential solutionsContinuously learn about software engineering best practices for Data Science and guide and coach our Data Scientists on itProspectivelycreate a generalised framework for human in the loop interaction on Data Science modelsin close collaboration with our central IT team architects and web developers create interactive Data Science model apps for the public internet (architecture tbd)Key Skills/Experience Required:
A proven track record as software engineerExperience with operational maintenance of live applications, refactoring, and release managementExcellent Python skills and experience with Python packages for applications (such as Dash)Professional use of version control tools in projects involving several developersExperience with designing and managing containerized applications and familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g. AWS)Data handling knowledge and experience using relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) Preferably previous exposure to Data Analytics or Data ScienceInterest in working on analytics and forecasting projects heavily reliant on human / machine collaboration
