Senior Data Scientist, Digital Commerce

The primary mission for the Senior data scientist is to serve as player-coach in the data science space. As a “coach” their primary role is to shape the vision and build the operating model for digital data science, train and mentor other data scientists, and promote data science across the digital organization. As a “player”, this role is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in a specific area of data science, they are responsible for consulting and advising the organization in driving the business and brand forward using data science tools, technologies, and techniques. They are also primarily responsible they are also responsible for wrangling large datasets, meshing disparate fields of data that don’t naturally mesh together, collecting data from all kinds of different sources, performing exploratory data analyses, identifying causal impact and attribution, analyzing impact of various campaigns, using data algorithms to efficiently and effectively deploy new ideas as required by our digital product and merchandising teams. This position data mines big data and interprets complex data from multiple sources using a variety of techniques. Designs, develops implements data model to support the business solutions. Responsibilities and Qualifications Leading the Way (team leadership, coaching and development responsibilities for this “manager of staff”) Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the organization promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results. Supports the implementation of company programs, procedures, methods, and practices to promote REI key messages. Challenges and inspires employees to achieve business results. Ensures employees adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements. Oversees training and development of employees directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions. Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews. Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to employees in order to achieve department, company and customer results. Establishes and maintains visibility within the department. Monitors operational statistics, reports trends, variances and issues, and takes appropriate action. Your Planning & Navigating Requirements (the plans the job is responsible for creating and executing, and how the job ensures they are implemented) Serve as the leader of data science for the digital organization o Challenges and inspires peers to achieve business results. o Oversees training and development of other data scientists o Provides effective feedback for peers and others in 360 reviews. o Provides coaching, direction, and leadership support to data scientists and analysts to achieve company and customer results. o Establishes and maintains visibility within the team and within the product group. Support Data science for commerce platforms: Serve as the data governor and SME for emerging commerce platforms, including AEP, Algonomy, and upcoming search platform. o Understand what data is available, what it means (and what it doesn’t mean) and how to best utilize new datasets to serve stakeholder needs. o Partner with the Marketing Platform Domain Architect for discovery of new and novel datasets that can improve personalization, search, and recommendations. o Be a superuser for our data-driven commerce platforms and build a “playbook” of best practices for business users o Build the blueprint for valuation and effectiveness of third-party commerce platforms. Digital clickstream data stewardship: Ensures that the data in their care is of high quality and is fit for use by all data stakeholders in the organization who are concerned with that set of data. o This role is distinct from engineering and data governance as it focuses on the meaning and use of data, rather than the technical implementation (ETL, etc) o Enforce rules and standards so that there is a clear understanding of what the data means. o Ability to see beyond silos and implement rules and processes for the data under their care. o Managing new requirements of the dataset based on existing standards, policies, and procedures o Serve as the primary point of contact and coordination for data management issues and operations within the steward’s data domain o Work closely with the Marketing Platform Domain Architect to review new requirements and help them determine which data and source systems best fit the solution design and when new integrations and technology enhancements are needed Modelling for clickstream-centered data (personalization, search, ranking) o Understanding, building, and optimizing better clickstream-centric search, ranking, and tile models to improve product KPIs o Providing a POV on product ontology and relationships to enable and build/execute expertise models and recommendations o Build real-time personalization models and ML algorithms (and understand/utilize/optimize ML algorithms build by consumer insights data science) o Partner with counterpart data scientists to integrate other data sources into clickstream use cases (for instance, customer propensity models) Advanced digital planning o Forecasting and “what if” scenarios to support digital merchandising levers, actions, and results. o Building the capability (through training and support) to accelerate self-service insights and message testing to digital merchants and self-service product testing to product managers. Data science SME and point of contact for digital product managers. The 10+ Essentials Required Skills & Experience Masters + 4 yrs experience or BS and 6 yrs experience as a data scientist in a DTC (direct to consumer) retail environment Fluency and direct experience serving as a data 3+ years’ experience developing and executing ML/statistical learning models to improve customer outcomes and solve business problems in an eCommerce environment Fluency and direct experience with statistical and machine learning algorithms such as decision trees, neural networks, collaborative filtering, clustering, survival analysis, graph theory, etc. Mastery working with raw and prepared data sources in a variety of RDBMS systems (Snowflake, Oracle, TeraData, Redshift etc) and NoSQL environments such as Hadoop, Spark, Athena Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to successfully communicate ideas and sell strategic plans to Product Managers and Business Managers while influencing adoption and successful implementation Proven ability to work in a cross-functional product team environment Able to keep others current on current scientific advancements.
