General Overview

The Senior Director, Engineering, for Teledyne RD Instruments plans and directs the product development and sustaining engineering activities.  As a key member of senior management, champions a proactive approach and recommends technology solutions to enhance performance to achieve both short-term and long-term objectives.  Leads a team of approximately 24 engineers in our Poway location in the development and manufacturing of state-of-the-art piezoelectric hydroacoustic transducers.  The priorities of this position include strategic planning, product design and development, quality assurance, staff development and problem resolution.  Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.  A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Responsible for product development, including catalog product/software, custom solutions, externally funded NRE program deliverables and sustaining engineering.

Develop and deliver new products and support existing production per business unit plan to meet established key results for New Product Introduction (NPI) revenue, profitability and customer satisfaction metrics.

Proactively collaborate with business unit executive team to formulate long-term business strategy, road map and detailed plans for products and technology.

Provide periodic corporate level reports on new product development/ introduction, R&D expense allocation, R&D tax credit assessment.

Establish, refine and continuously improve formal engineering development processes, procedures and metrics to meet business unit objectives.  Demonstrate continuous quality and development execution improvement on a year over year basis.

Provide direction, support and engineering department personnel in cross-functional support of/collaboration with sales, operations and customer support to ensure current production products meet delivery commitments, performance, and measured quality objectives.

Establish and manage detailed department and project budgets in collaboration with the engineering management team. Manage budget to plan while delivering on established annual business unit key results objectives for NPI Revenue, Profitability and Customer Satisfaction.

Builds, develops and manages an engineering team capable of carrying out the needed engineering initiatives.  Build team capabilities through resource analysis, hiring, mentoring and training.

Develops and implements methods and procedures for monitoring projects, such as preparation of records of expenditures and findings, progress reports and staff conferences, to inform senior management of status of each project.

Establishes operational objectives and directs subordinates to achieve assignments by providing leadership, assigning tasks and checking work at appropriate intervals to determine status of assigned projects and ensure goals are met within organization goals of budget, time requirements and high level of quality.

Identifies obstacles to achieving business goals and provides solutions or seeks out appropriate assistance. Determines allocation of resources and equipment.

Interacts with supervisors/managers, outside customers and functional peer groups at various management levels. Interaction normally requires the ability to inspire and gain cooperation of others, to conduct or aid other in conducting presentations or to exchange information.

Daily availability to include evenings and weekends when necessary to reach goals and deadlines.

Supervisory Responsibilities                                            

This job provides leadership and management to functional area(s) which may include supervision of managers and supervisors and direct supervision of other exempt and non-exempt personnel.  Carries out leadership responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include providing leadership to employees, interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications/Requirements

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university in Electrical Engineering or closely related technical field and 10-15 years of directly related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.   Advanced degree is desirable.

Other Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated success driving engineering projects to completion on time and on budget.

Demonstrated experience and proven track record in recruiting, hiring and retaining top engineering talent at all experience levels.

Proven track record of delivering complex, high reliability product to competitive markets via a well-structured project management process with very high delivered/ measured quality.

Knowledge of the methodology and associated phases, activities and deliverables for the design of new products and the enhancement of existing products; ability to apply the methodology in diverse scenarios.

Hands on product development experience in digital signal processing, analog electrical design, digital electrical design, ruggedized mechanical design and/or embedded software design.

Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.

Strong interpersonal skills to lead and collaborate across teams.

Expertise in acoustic Doppler/SONAR technology and products preferred.

Expertise with signal processing, firmware development and acoustic transducer technology preferred.

  

Salary Range:

$139,700.00-$187,770.000

The anticipated salary range listed for this role is only an estimate. Actual compensation for successful candidates is carefully determined based on several factors including, but not limited to, location, education/training, work experience, key skills, and type of position.
