Senior Director, Litigation and Special Projects Communications

The Senior Director, Litigation and Special Projects Communications is a critical member of the Global Communications team, working closely with Legal, Corporate Communications, Therapeutic Business Units, and other business and functional teams. This role is focused on ensuring communications preparedness and deploying strategies for various litigation and other external legal matters impacting Lilly’s business and reputation. The ideal candidate will bring a depth of strategic experience in litigation and legal communications, preferably in the biopharmaceutical space, possess outstanding writing skills, be adept at performing in a fast-paced environment, and have solid media relations experience. This position will report into the Vice President, External Communications. Primary Responsibilities + Develop proactive and reactive message documents, including talking points, standby statements, and FAQs. + In collaboration with legal, public affairs, external agencies, and other business partners, assess threats and prepare proactive communications strategies. + Monitor and track evolving external stakeholder and legal landscape to resolve and implement third-party engagement strategies. + Initiate rapid response protocols and handle incoming media queries in collaboration with legal, public affairs and external agencies. + Build and maintain relationships with key media. + Provide direction to external agencies and vendors as needed. Requirements + Extensive corporate or agency experience working with legal teams on complex litigation and enforcement matters. + Understanding of and familiarity with legal system and litigation processes. + Experience collaborating with third parties to drive communications strategies specific to legal matters. + Corporate and/or agency external communications and crisis management communications experience. + Experience deploying media strategies and shown success interacting with local and national reporters. + Ability to work quickly and with urgency under deadline. + Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams across a matrixed organization, establishing strong working relationships. + Superb verbal and written communication skills. + Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. + Highly organized, independent thinker with the ability to handle multiple tasks. + Ability to be a flexible team player, act quickly, and meet deadlines with the highest ethical and business standards. + Meticulous attention to detail, with ability to grasp and focus on the big picture. + Project management capabilities that include process development and measurement. Basic Requirements + Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or related field, including prelaw, healthcare or science. + At least 7 years of experience in a professional communications position. + Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Additional Skills/Preferences + J.D. or law firm work experience. + Confirmed ability to lead, handle, and align large cross-functional teams; ability to develop teamworks and good working relationships to secure alignment across all functions. + Experience working in the biopharmaceutical industry strongly preferred. + Strong strategic thinking skills with the ability to develop and lead strategic projects, engage others, and translate strategy into implementation tactics and capabilities. + Demonstrated ability to influence others and lead without authority. + Excellent communication and relationship-building skills across functional and geographic boundaries as well as across, up, and down the organizational ladder.
