The University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) is world-renowned for its clinical leadership, exemplary practices, and innovation. To help prepare the next generation of clinicians for practice, UPHS is committed to maintaining strong partnerships with regional universities providing clinical education and training. One way UPHS supports schools is by providing clinical practice sites for students enrolled in degree programs to become advanced practice providers (APPs).
This position plays a pivotal role in aligning the health systems advance practice provider (APP) workforce plans with its strategic goals. This involves analyzing current workforce capabilities, forecasting future talent needs and developing strategies to ensure the right people are in the right roles at the right time. This role will partner with Human Resources and other stakeholders to develop and implement retention strategies for advanced practice providers.
This role will serve as the convener of key stakeholder leaders across the health system to ensure a collective approach to workforce planning that will ultimately improve operational efficiency, increase productivity and maintain a competitive advantage in the advance practice provider workforce.
They will develop strategies to ensure that clinical teams across the health system have the talent necessary to drive innovation and exceptional patient care. They will engage with educational institutions and training programs and develop placement strategies and career readiness for the next generation of advanced practice providers.
Accountabilities
Strategic alignment: This role will ensure the workforce strategy aligns with the organization’s short and long-term goals regarding the advance practice provider workforce.
Workforce analysis: Incumbent with assess current workforce skills and identify gaps within the current workforce and develop action plans to address those gaps.
Talent forecasting: With the use of data, including business objectives and market trends, predicts future talent needs.
Monitors and evaluates: Continuously evaluates the effectiveness of workforce plans and makes necessary adjustments.
Aligns workforce strategy with Penn Medicine’s inclusion, equity and diversity philosophy.
Clinical Placement Site Identification: Identify and evaluate potential clinical placement sites within the health system that align with schools’ needs. Collaborate with hospital units, departments, and clinical placement staff to assess the availability and suitability of clinical placement opportunities.
Coordination with Regional Schools: In partnership with the Associate Chief for Advanced Practice and the ACNO for Professional Development, maintain strong relationships with regional schools to facilitate effective communication and collaboration. Coordinate placement schedules and requirements with school representatives to ensure smooth student transitions.
Expansion of Clinical Placement Opportunities: Proactively seek and create new opportunities for clinical placements within the health system to meet the growing demand for education. Collaborate with leaders to explore innovative approaches to expanding and diversifying placement options.
Equitable Distribution of Students: Develop and implement processes to ensure equitable distribution of students across health system sites, taking into consideration program requirements and student needs. Monitor and adjust placement assignments to optimize the learning experience for students.
Best Practices Sharing: Collaborate with clinical leaders across the health system to identify and share best practices for managing student rotations, including student onboarding and preceptorships. Foster a culture of continuous improvement by implementing strategies to enhance the quality of the student placement experience.
Data Analysis and Reporting: Collect and analyze data related to student placements, including feedback from students, faculty, and clinical preceptors. Prepare regular reports for leadership to assess the effectiveness of student placement strategies and identify areas for improvement.
In support of UPHS’s efforts to ensure a diverse, inclusive and equitable workplace, the Director will work with key stakeholders to drive an inclusive and fair process for APP student placement across the health system that ensures that students can learn, thrive and grow.

Minimum Requirements
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is required (Master’s is preferred)
5+ years of experience coordinating clinical placement and/or higher education administrative coordination for clinical programs
Experience working at an academic health system
Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications
Licensed as an APRN or PA in Pennsylvania
