Senior Director of Research Information Services

The primary responsibility of the Senior Director of Research Information Services (RIS) is to assist the Vice President of Research Informatics for the planning, coordination, and leadership of information technology infrastructure in support of St. Jude research. The Senior Director will provide technical, administrative, and people leadership for diverse cross-functional technology service teams. In addition, the Senior Director will have direct responsibility of establishing controls to monitor operational efficiencies and reporting key performance indicators on all aspects of scientific computing technology infrastructure and support services. This includes providing strategic and operational guidance and leadership on high performance computing, research data storage, cloud-based technology platforms, and scientific data processing, ensuring adequate availability and efficient utilization of technology resources and services for St. Jude research. Works in close partnership with the St. Jude Office of Chief Data Scientist, Academic Departments, Faculty, PI Labs, Share Resource Cores, Technology Centers, and Administrative Offices. Requires effective communication with peers and senior management. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists the Vice President, Research informatics in defining and executing a research technology strategy that supports institution’s strategic initiatives. Contributes to the development, implementation, operation, maintenance, support, and retirement of scientific computing and research IS infrastructure. Contributes to the development of fiscal year (FY) research IS goals and cost center operations and the preparation of FY capital / operating budgets. Ensures the development and implementation of operational and management controls including key performance indicators across RIS portfolio. Assists in the recruitment and retention of high caliber professionals. Coaches and counsels staff. Ensures training and ongoing staff development. Leads the assessment of customer needs, requirements, and priority for efficient and successful delivery of services with customer satisfaction. Coordinates periodic review of research IS initiatives, activities, and projects; and provides status reports to senior management. Contributes to departmental and organizational communication on the status of initiatives, activities, and projects. Contributes to the development, review, update, and application of institutional and departmental policies and compliance guides on research IS systems. Partners with St. Jude faculty and institutional leadership to develop and implement a governance and management practice on institution’s scientific computing and research data storage systems. Maintains an awareness and understanding of technological advances, vendor product offerings and issues. Actively shapes, promotes, and supports the institutional core values, guiding principles, and strategic direction in support of the institutional strategic plan. Partners with Information Security, Compliance, and Internal Audit to identify and resolve risks impacting the research technology portfolio. Performs other related duties as directed in order to meet departmental and institutional goals and objectives. Maintains regular and predictable attendance. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND /OR TRAINING: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in business administration, engineering, computer science, data science, information science or a related field of study is required. Ph.D. degree preferred. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 12+ years of experience in operations and engineering, with a focus on organizational change management, incident management, and infrastructure and facilities management. Twelve (12) years of progressive leadership experience within an academic, research, or related industry in the management of high performance computing and information technology infrastructure is highly preferred. Eight (8) years of management experience is highly preferred. Prior experience in supporting basic science research and/or clinical/biomedical research using HPC and computational engineering technologies is highly preferred. Prior experience in building external connections with peers, emerging technology communities, and vendor networks is highly preferred. Prior experience in vendor contract negotiations and vendor management is highly preferred. SPECIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES: Familiarity with high performance computing and information technology infrastructure and operations. Familiarity with regulatory requirements and standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, NIST) related to computer systems development, operations, and use. Ability to communicate with all levels of management both orally and in writing. Ability to take initiative, operate independently and motivate self and others. Knowledge and skill with team building and leadership. Ability to manage conflict appropriately. Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities. Skill and ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Knowledge and skills with project management tools and methods. Compensation In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
