Job Summary

Battelle’s Energy Division is currently seeking a Senior Drilling and Completions Engineer. This position is located in  Columbus, OH, but will consider remote locations.

 

The Drilling and Completions Engineer will be responsible for planning and executing drilling, completions, injectivity testing and workover operations related to carbon storage applications. The selected applicant will be involved in the entire drilling, completing and testing life cycle, from initial well design to well testing to managing on-site execution team and will work collaboratively with our internal teams of subsurface team and project manager as well as external teams of clients and many service providers. Applicants with good communication and engineering skills who are willing to travel can succeed in this role. 

Responsibilities Engineering Well Drilling and Completion design - planning and executing drilling, completions, and workover projects is essential to this role.  Participate with management team to offer strategic input to well planning and overall storage site design.Budgeting - prepare project budgets and carefully monitor costsMentor and train other staff.  Well DesignDesign and implement drilling and completion programs, including injectivity testing, legacy wells assessment, remediation and abandonment activities for carbon capture and storage projects, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and industry best practices.Involved from initial design to the final abandonment stage of a project.  Providing technical guidance and ensuring the successful execution of projects.Conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies to address potential challenges in drilling and completion operations.Oversee the preparation and submission of technical documentation, including drilling plans, completion reports, and regulatory submissions.Monitor and evaluate drilling and completion activities, making recommendations for optimization and improvementRecommend other drilling design alternatives using techniques such as hydraulics, casing design, cement design, etc. as neededEvaluate Drilling SitesEvaluate the desirability and feasibility of a particular well site and all logistics requirements related to the site.Calculate Drilling CostsCalculate the total cost of drilling, completions, and workover operations. Prepare AFE's. Closely monitor drilling operations to make sure work is going according to schedule, costs are accurately captured, and that project objectives are being met.Maintain Stakeholder CommunicationServe as a key liaison between internal and external parties to ensure the success of a drilling operation safely. When conflicts arise, work with project team and present solutions for stakeholders to agree on and approve. Ensure the project is adhering to environment standards and regulatory requirements.Monitor Drilling ProcessesWork closely with well site supervisor and other subcontractors to ensure drill plan is followed.Perform benchmarking, identify areas that need improvement, or find ways to apply new technologies for efficiency. Keep drilling operations on track, coordinate daily operational calls, check the accuracy of reports, lead risk assessments, run pre-spud meetings (DWOP, etc) and coordinate logistics.Make cost-effective changes that keep complex drilling projects on time and on budget.Key Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 6 years of drilling, completions (including injectivity testing) and workover experience or Master’s degree in Engineering with 4 years of related experience or PhD with 1 year of related experience.Experience performing casing design and nodal analysis is required.Extensive knowledge and practical operations experience on completion activities, injectivity testing, legacy wells remediation and abandonment activities.Data analysis - engineers will be expected to conduct thorough analysis on relevant data obtained from offset wells when designing wells.Contracting – familiarity and experience with IADC standard contracting and common subcontracts in the oilfield.  Effective negotiations skills with external contractors, clients and efficiency in establishing performance benchmarks.Analytical skills - analyzing drilling performance and factors that affect project cost and effectiveness. Competent and clear writing skills for reports required for action authorization or recommendations.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working collaboratively with internal teams and external partners.Leadership skills - the ability to lead engineering project meetings and problem-solving efforts with clients, proven experience as team leaders will be advantageous.Ability to assist with project proposals, including conceptualization, client interaction, budgeting, schedule development, delivery, and presentation. Confident, decision maker who commands respect with deep level of onshore drilling expertise.Strong commitment to safety with demonstrated safe operations record.Ability to travel and spend time on drill sites, particularly during sensitive operations.Must be a US Citizen.Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 10 years of drilling, completions (including. injectivity testing) and workover experience or Master’s degree in Engineering with 8 years of related experience or PhD with 5 years of related experience.Minimum 10 years of experience in CCS drilling and completion operations, with a strong background in leading teams, managing clients or stakeholders within a service company and project developers/operators environments.
