Employment Type: Permanent Staff (EHRA NF) Vacancy ID: NF0008837 Salary Range: $80,000-$98,981 Position Summary/Description: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. This position will provide pro-active counseling and will apply advanced knowledge to resolve employee relations concerns, model critical thinking for complex problems and serve as a lead consultant in developing creative solutions for departments, managers and employees in all E&MR related issues and demonstrate a high level of integrity and in-depth knowledge to ensure compliance with university, state and federal laws. This position is expected to demonstrate a high degree of independent decision-making, judgement, accountability and requires significant professional-level employee relations experience. This position provides consultation, guidance and advice to employees and all levels of management on a wide-range of employee relations topics affecting SHRA (staff) and EHRA Non-Faculty employees for assigned departments. Topics include, but are not limited to: Progressive disciplinary actions and involuntary separations Managing and approving terminations and at-will discontinuations Mediation and Facilitated Conversations Complex conflict resolution strategies Addressing employee conduct issues Confronting Leave related issues (i.e., FMLA and Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ) in partnership with Benefits and Leave Administration and ADA Units Absenteeism and work schedule issues Administrative leave programs (adverse weather, pandemic, and administrative absence) Consultation on complex workplace issues and work environment concerns Investigations into employee misconduct In conjunction with the University’s Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office/ ADA ( EOC ), assisting departments with Harassment, discrimination, and disability accommodations This position analyzes employee issues and provides guidance based on interpretation of University policies and applicable State and Federal laws. This position is responsible for ensuring employees are given ‘real time’ advice regarding routine, critical, intense, and complex personal and work-related situations. The position is charged with developing, recommending, and facilitating options and strategies in accordance with federal, state and University policies, procedures, statutes, and best practices that demonstrate a thorough assessment/analysis of the situation. This Advanced Level Consultant is also expected to have expertise and experience in developing and delivering well-structured presentations for training both internal and external customers. In this regard, this position is expected to be able to create customized training on a variety of employee relations policies and/or topics using relevant platforms. Although the primary focus of this position is on E&MR issues related to SHRA and EHRA -NF employees, this position will partner with the University Office of Faculty Affairs regarding similar issues related to Faculty employees. Education and Experience: Candidates with 5 or more years of professional-level employee relations experience will be strongly preferred. Prior human resources (and ideally employee relations) experience in a public sector and/or higher education setting is preferred, but not a firm requirement. Prior experience with North Carolina State Government (e.g., SHRA ) personnel policies is desirable, but also not a requirement. Essential Skills: The position incumbent must have substantial experience in facilitating resolution of workplace disputes between employees and managers. Knowledge of human resources best practices and the ability to provide guidance based on interpretation of university policies and applicable State and Federal laws is required. Requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as analytical and problem-solving skills. Proven experience as a motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously. The position incumbent must be able to develop and maintain collaborative client relationships and deal effectively with line employees as well as senior managers. This position also requires experience in providing consultation on disciplinary actions, workplace misconduct investigations, EHRA -NF employee issues, and strong written communication and editing skills.
